Sometimes no matter how you try to save people from themselves they are hell bent to proceed towards disaster... I had a dear friend who decided to have his surgery in Mexico.. he has since died from various complications related to the surgery.. spent darn near a year in and out of ICU.. I wouldn't go anywhere near Mexico.. I have been there and no matter how they dress it up with their 4 star hotels, it's a dirty country and no regulation... and it is a dangerous country... we were robbed there the first day .. the police are a joke .. they are all very corrupt.. so, this Dr. is probably selling defective bands because he doesn't care about his patients.. My opinion is mine alone and no matter what we all say she is determined to go.. I pray all turns out well but I'm not confident that it will...

Since there has been so much discussion recently regarding the older Allergan Lap-Band® I thought I would take the time to clarify some misconceptions. The 4cc and the 10cc VG band are still being produced by Allergan today and are used by almost all the Mexican surgeons as well as in Europe and Australia. It is absolutely untrue as has been stated in previous posts that they were discontinued by the FDA. They are still approved and being manufactured and distributed by Allergan. While it is true that most US surgeons use the newer AP Allergan band, these are proving to be more difficult to adjust. Many patients are either too tight or too loose. Some of the Canadian surgeons are going back to using the older 4cc and 10cc VG bands. If you actually do want to do your research. Contact Allergan directly.

I did do my research and there are thousands of FDA reports about them, which is what led to them no longer allowed to be used in the USA.

There is an extremely high complication rate with the 4cc band. This is fact. If someone is willing to risk their health using outdated bands- when there are newer safer ones available- that's their choice. But it's describable that "medical tourism" in Mexico uses them to cut financial corners.

The FDA is a U.S. Government Agency and has no jurisdiction over Mexico, Canada, Europe. And please provide your documentation that "these are proving to be more difficult to adjust"?

You should also divulge the fact that you work for Kuri??

I just signed up for the procedure with Dr Kuri. The only thing I am concerned about though is the fact that he uses the original allergen lap band. The nurse told me it is because the new ones have more difficulties and the old one is better. Is this correct?? I found a doctor in Milwaukee that will do fills when I get back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I get banded on May 21.

I have a co worker who was banded in Mexico 5 years ago and she couldn't find any one in the states that would give her maintenance on her band. Her band slipped and she had to get it removed.

Before going to another country, do some research on the prices in different states. I was a self pay and I found a great doctor who worked with me so I could afford the procedure. He is a 2 hour drive from my house but well worth it. I thought about mexico too but it's just not worth the risk. You can find someone in the US, you just have to search them out.

There has been so much misinformation on this forum regarding the older bands still currently being manufactured by Allergan and in use in over 500,500 patients world wide. I am a Patient Facilitator for Dr. Pedro Kuri and sent an inquiry to Allergan (Mexico Division directly. This is the letter (translated from Spanish to English) that was sent back to us and dated April 29, 2013:

This is to confirm that that two Allergan Lap-Bands® currently licensed and in use in Mexico as well as many other contries throughout the world continue to be FDA approved.

Adjustible Gastric Band 9.75cm and 10cm

Adjustible Gastric Band VG 9.75cm and 10cm

For those of you who would like to confirm this please feel free to contact Allergan directly

Dr. Kuri did my surgery and my local doctor did not see a problem with the 4cc band. I had a good experience with him and his staff and have a friend that was banded by him over 7 years ago and has not suffered any complications.

I was banded with 4cc band about 5 or 6 yrs ago by Dr Kuri only complication was my port had flipped and to go back for them to fix My band is fickle though. Sometimes not able to hardly swallow Water and then other times I can eat nearly anything. I have less than one cc fill and still find it to be enough. I think the band has prevented me from gaining back the original 50 lbs I lost. I would like to lose another 30 to 50 lbs but can't seem to get motivated enough. It's all up to me...

This doesn't change the fact the 4cc band is discontinued in the US and UK because of it's high rate of slips, erosion, and other complications. It's only still used in Mexico because they can get it dirt cheap.

Btw, there are many GOOD surgeons in Mexico that don't use the 4cc band anymore because they actually put patient safety a priority over money.

It's also important to note Dr. Kuri has been blamed for one death:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
