Recommended Posts

I was banded April 5th on my preop diet I lost 23lbs which is awesome!!!!! But after the surgery when should I start to loose weight. I'm on full liquids but that started today (thank god) and I am not rushing it I promise but when should I see the scale move?

It depends on your band and your metabolism!

I lost 15 pounds on the presurgery diet, but I also put it all back on, and a bit more, post surgery. After my third fill I started feeling satiated after eating the recommended amount of Protein at each meal. What really started losing the pounds was seriously watching Protein and portion intake, and doing daily exercise. Don't be discouraged if things don't happen fast. For some folks the pounds fall off with no fills. Others, like me, can take three or four visits to start experiencing getting near the green zone. Just don't lose faith and keep to the plan your doctor advises you to follow and you will do fine!

Everyone is different. Try not to weigh every day. It will make you tense. Give your body time to heal!

Your question really has no definitive answer. Everyone will be different depending on how much they had to lose after surgery, what kind of pre-op diet they had, exercise regiment and what does one consider as weight lost?

Most of us lose 10-30 lbs of Water within the first 2-4 weeks. Some of it may be fat lbs but most likely not much. After the initial healing period is over(6 weeks) we can lose 1-2 lbs per week but may go a few weeks or a month with no weight loss at all.

Plateaus are common, and for many of us, in the beginning it's a combination of replacing fat which consumes more space in our bodies, with muscle which is denser. Of course, exercise affects this ratio. Even though the scale isn't moving we may be losing fat and inches which is always a good thing.

Hey Jessica. We were banded the same day! I have lost 16 pounds pre-op and as of today...3 since surgery. I was also told that weight gain/loss is not important right now. Healing and getting our Protein and Water in are!! I wish you all the best!

The first 4-6 weeks after surgery are for healing, not losing. Plus, a lot of us go from not wanting to eat anything from the surgery swelling to starving, essentially going from not enough calories to too many. Overall you need to focus on healing above all else.

As far as when you'll lose weight, it all depends on you. When you are burning more calories than you consume, you'll lose. Some people really struggle before they have adequate Fluid in their bands so they don't start losing for a couple months after surgery. Personally, I started counting calories and measuring my food from the day I got home from the hospital, so I lost consistently even through the healing phases after surgery.

Best wishes.

Really great advice thank you guys. I know it's time for healing. I'm ok with not loosing I just want to do everything right!!! I am a perfectionist when it comes to things I want so bad. Today I had grits for Breakfast wow I love it!!!! My diet for the first week after surgery was Clear Liquids only. So no Protein Shakes. I was just so worried I was taking in to much juice :) I thank everyone for the encouraging comments

I was banded on the 5th too! :) I have lost 20 pounds since I started the pre-op diet on March 25th. About 5 pounds is post surgery loss. I didn't lose anything the first 3 days after surgery but the last few days I have lost about a pound a day. I am on a liquid diet for a couple more days then on to mushies. I have been making sure to get my Protein in through Atkins Day Break shakes as they are low carb and also using Unjury vanilla powder in my coffee. :) I am currently looking for low carb mushy ideas if anyone has any!?

I was also banded on the 5th :) I'm on soft foods now, and I actually gained a lb yesterday. I had plication done as well, so I can't eat very much to begin with so I'm curious to see how much of my post op weight I gain back

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
