Getting banded today and having mixed feelings already....

Recommended Posts

So today is my big day and I am having so many mixed feelings/emotions that I am starting to flip out a bit. First of all, my husband is not supportive at all and has refused to go to the hospital with me so my best friend is going to accompany me. This has been a really hard adjustment in itself but I am not losing sight of what the end result will be regardless of what he thinks. Secondly, I hate surgery and get myself all worked up when I have to have it!!!! So now, I have been sick with a cold for the last three days and I am really worried that something will go wrong. The hospital said that they will do the surgery as long as I have no fever (which I haven't had any sign of a fever) but this cough is what worries me because of the stitching and such. I am scheduled to arrive at the hospital by 10:30 this morning so I guess we shall see if they decide to still do it based on what presents when they examine me . Well, wish me luck and any prayers would be appreciated also....oh and good luck to anyone else having their bands done today!!

First off, your husband is a D**k! I don't care if you agree, but you support your spouse's decisions.

Secondly what you are experiencing is normal, stop focusing on what might happen, and focus on why you want the surgery. Yes, you are going to be uncomfortable, yes, you are going to experience pain, yes you have a long journey ahead of you.

Best wishes.

I am sorry to hear that your husband is not supportive but thankful you have such a close friend! You are making a wonderful decision that will guide you to being healthier and happier! i am worried about your cough though. I am 6 days post op and could not imagine coughing right now. Please make sure you tell them you are coughing so an informed decision can be made.

Chin up! You have come this far already!!

All the best and keep us posted!

Will be thinking of you!

Mandy

I have to agree with the person that said your husband is being a d*ck. If he's one of those selfish a-holes that think you'll lose weight and leave him...well, with the way he's treating you, maybe you will. But, that will be HIS OWN DANG FAULT!! Quite honestly, if it were me, I'd tell him as much. Then again, I've been divorced...twice, so I might not be the best relationship-advice-giver. lol

I commend you for doing what you need to do, for yourself! Best of luck with the surgery and keep all of us posted. -hugs-

Hopefully, you husband is just against this because he is worried. People handle worry and stress in different ways. Yes, the way he is handling is a Jerky way, but hopefully once he sees the positive outcomes he will adjust.

Don't worry so much - no point in worrying over what if's most all of the time the what it's never happen.

That sucks! Having family support is very important... he is being a jerk.

The only good thing is that this proves you are doing the lap band for YOURSELF, and that is the most important thing. Too many people do the band because of outside influences. Hang in their, your significant other will come around when he sees the positive changes the band will bring you!

Hi, I think we all get nervous before any surgery, I am 6 days post op and when it was over I had a cough it was really sore I would hold a small blanket or a towel around my belly I've heard some say to hug a pillow when you cough and that helped. good luck! Everything will be okay :)

Agree with all the above commentors, and would add that holding a pillow against your incisions will help if/when you cough. In fact, you'll want to be coughing up stuff (anesthetia, etc) after your surgery so don't suppress the urge. Just hold onto that pillow to keep your tummy "in" when you are jiggling it by coughing.

I'm sorry about your hubby!!! What a jerk!

I didn't really want my hubby to go. I figured since he hated hospitals he wouldn't want to go with me BUT I was wrong he went and I had no choice. I'm glad he did go. It was a bonding moment to see he really cared.

Hopefully as you read this you are well out of surgery and everything is fine. I was banded 3/4 and I do remember coughing was challenging (although much worse for my gastric sleeve roommate). Fortunately I didn't have a cold! The pillow did work well. Hope your husband is a "keeper" in other ways. A lot of people don't get this surgery, think it's risky and that somehow it's the easy way out. I wonder if either he doesn't have weight issues and doesn't understand why you need to do this or if he does have weight issues and this is a threat to him. Either way, thank goodness you have a good friend to help. My youngest son wasn't supportive (out of concern) and really thought I should do it the "old fashioned way." But he's happy for me now. And my husband has been so supportive, so I consider myself blessed. Good luck and don't let this keep you from getting to your goals. Hopefully your friend will help you with the first few days of recovery at home and for those things you need bought and done for you. Sending good thoughts your way. Best, Melanie

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
