Why no straws?

Why do surgeons say no straws?

My doctor said I could drink with a one.

What happens?

I think one of the possible concerns is taking in excess air. Each dr is different though.

My doctor said straws were ok. I've used straws since hours after my surgery. I've had no issues at all.

I use straws with no problems. Can't even remember what my doc said about it, if anything.

mine said no straws, no gum, no soda, no bread unless toasted... no drinking for 45 min after eating and 5 minutes before eating.oh and probably no pasta.. but I have eaten a small amount of Pasta with no problem... but yes they are all different.. he also does not do a fill during surgery, and has so far only given me one fill 1.8 cc..

My surgeon never mentioned straws and I drink everything with a straw and have not experienced any problem with it. He also never mentioned gum... I don't understand that one. I could understand if he said no swallowing gum. Mine did say no aspirin or ibuprofen at all ever ;-(

I use a straw all of the time...I would never drink as much as I'm supposed to daily without one. Like others said, I'm sure it is because of the excess air it creates. For me, it hasn't caused a problem. My doctor left it up to personal preference. I am careful with gum though. I had a close call...sneezed while chewing a piece of gum and almost swallowed it...definitely put me in a panic!! What problems will ibuprofen have on the band?

I've had no issues with straws either

And my doc said I could take ibuprofen!

Gum I'd probably accidentally swallow plus it gives me headaches he never said I couldn't have it though.

I talked about the gum thing awhile back and got smart remarks but here is my theory on all of this straws, etc. If my Dr. tells me to stand on my head an spit wooden nickles that is what I am doing.. so, I say do what works for you and if your Dr. says okay than it's okay with me.. I just know what I need to do . I know what I am supposed to eat and not to drink , etc. I have a book that they gave me after surgery that explains each step of the process.. it's like my bible... good luck to everyone..

Aspirin/ibuprofen in excess can cause ulcers, stomach irritation.

Aspirin/ibuprofen in excess can cause ulcers' date=' stomach irritation.[/quote']

And even more seriously, it can lead to band erosion.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
