Hi, I'm new here! I just talked to my dr today for the first time about getting a lapband done. I have went up and down in weight all my life and I'm not talking a little fluctuation, I lost 75 pounds in a year and a half and gained it back in a year and a half. I've done this for the past 14 years. Anyway, my dr put in my consultation for the nutritionist and I will start my 6 months of documented visits in a couple of weeks. I know nothing about what to expect for this surgery so I am asking for any and all information that can help me get prepared. Also, I know people that have had weight loss surgery and they lost so much weight so fast that they looked sick so it scares me. How do you prevent that? Thank you in advance for any information.

Make sure you ask your surgeon a lot of questions.

My mom would say start a list of questions to take with you to the doctor and she is always right. Take some time and look through all the posts on the forum. There is too much to tell you in a post. Best of luck to you!!

Just about everyone I know who has lap band surgery has said how they were good at dieting, lost as much as 75lbs, as you say, only to gain it all back and then some...myself included...

WLS is different....it is something that is altered surgically to permanently keep the weight off, for life.....if we let the band do it....

Loosing too much weight too fast.....

I get 2 different views on this.....other people who are NOT over weight, they are fit and in good to excellent health, are the ones who tell me all the time how great I look......including my Dr,'s and people at the gym.....

People who are the opposite, overweight, (obese) and unable to loose and keep the weight off, etc., THEY are the ones who comment that I do not look healthy, sickly.....I've had some ask me if I was terminally ill.....

Ok. Thank you.

I am a very active person and exercise regularly. It's my eating that I need help with! I enjoy running and weight training so I am hoping that I will tone as I lose.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
