Can the LB cause other medical Complications?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering... what happens if another medical issue comes up in your life and you have the LB? Does it interfere? Will it pose a problem down the road? Hypothetically if a woman has ovarian cysts or a heart problem? Will having the lap band cause unnecessary medical complications?

With the examples of medical conditions you gave, I'd say the band would help, not hinder. I have ovarian cysts and when I lost the weight was the first time I didn't have pain mid cycle. A friend of mine who got the lapband lost just 30lbs and fell pregnant naturally after 5 years for trying to conceive because her cycles returned for the first time since her early twenties.

I also have a strong family history of heart disease and diabetes and losing the weight meant I became low risk for both.

But it can exacerbate issues like reflux. So like anything, you have positive and negative impacts.

If something went wrong with your stomach or esophagus then yes the band could cause more problems.

But the beauty of the band is the fact it can be removed. If you say developed stomach cancer after the Sleeve you'd be screwed because you can't get that missing portion of your stomach back.

yep it can be unfilled or removed if needed. that is a big reason why some of us choose the band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
