Smoking prior to surgery

Recommended Posts

Ask your doctor about Welbutrin. I smoked for more than 30 years and really enjoyed smoking. Thought I'd never be able to stop. The Welbutrin stopped my physical cravings and I was able to quit. Never thought it was possible but I did it. I also gained 60 lbs which is why I had to come to the decision that being banded was the right thing for me to do. The good news is that I haven't smoked in nearly 7 years and three months post-banded, I'm down 45 lbs. Good luck to you on all fronts. I know you will be successful stopping smoking and losing weight.

A second vote for Welbutrin!! My doctor gave me a script for it over 12 years ago, and within two weeks of taking that drug the urge to smoke ceased, and one night when I was out of cigarettes I was able to quit. It was an off-label use for that drug back then--but for me it was very effective. But, if you only have two weeks to surgery I would give the drug a try, but don't smoke between now and the surgery date!

I am trying to Quit as well. I am having so much trouble. My Date is May 3' date=' and it is he@@ for me! Maybe we can be Support to each other.[/quote']

We totally should! I'm on my week without smoking, cold turkey. I can't do Wellbutrin, I work at a law firm and working there messes with your head about pharmeucticals. Cold turkey is working for me- also the gym I take Zumba classes at Lucille Roberts for the past 3 weeks, I leave out of there not even thinking a smoking! We can do this hon, I have faith we will both succeed in this!

If you can stop for a day, you can stop for two days... if you stop for a week, one more week will be easier... get by a month, and then hold your course for the second... before you know it the addiction and habit will pass. Congratulations on taking the first step.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
