Sour Taste in Mouth

Recommended Posts

I was banded with plication on Monday, 3/25/12. I'm on full liquids, and anything I eat/drink leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Has anyone else had this happen? I hope it's temporary, because it's disgusting and makes me want to throw up (though I haven't had any vomiting).

That is common right after surgery, but it doesn't last long.

I've heard many a ppl complain about that on this forum.

Congrats on banding!

Didn't you have your gallbladder removed at the same time you were banded?

Yes, I did have it out. With all that was done, it's hard to know what's causing what  But from Maddysgram's post, it sounds like this is a common complaint that doesn't last very long. I can only pray! It's pretty sickening.

Another issue I'm having along with the sour taste, is that when I wake up in the morning, I can still taste whatever I ate for dinner. Last night it was cream of potato Soup, and the night before was cream of chicken soup. I find ALL of these Soups sickening, and waking up with "that taste" in my mouth, makes me wonder......why? Is it the plication or the band? I really hope all of this is temporary. With ALL of my research prior to having surgery, these are things that I didn't anticipate.

You're probably still quite swollen, so I can understand the problems you are having. I can't speak on the plication b/c I don't have that.

Are you laying down right after eating? That is a no no.Eating late at night? Maybe eating to much?

Best thing to do is call your surgeon and discuss this with them. It might be as easy as smaller amounts, more frequently.

Good luck

I agree with Maddysgram, smaller amounts, and don't lie down right after eating. Call you doctor if this continues. Many put some fill in the band when it is first placed, and yours could be too tight with swelling.

I haven't been laying down after eating, but sitting on the recliner, yes. That's probably the same thing! Thanks for pointing that out.

Yesterday, I was so sick of the canned creamed Soups, I had my husband pick up some of the soups made fresh by the local market. He brought four different kinds, and the cream of potato was VERY different than Campbell's. Made with full cream, cheese, bacon.... I scooped out a little bit into a pot, and added milk to thin it out. Then I strained out the solids and ate about 3/4 cup. It was still pretty rich, and as I was eating it, I knew it wasn't a good thing. I didn't get sick, but the gurgling in my stomach spoke volumes - LOL. And this morning it was still with me. But then again, so was the canned cream of chicken the day before. Definitely a learning experience!

Thanks for your post, Maddysgram - I appreciate it.

These are really good points. I will check in with them tomorrow. The food (liquid) seems to go down fine, but I'm noticing that whatever I eat in the evening, is with me in the morning. I think you both are right.......it MUST be reclining after eating. Tonight I will jump up and down for an hour after! :o

The sour taste in your mouth is likely bile. I'm dealing with that in the mornings too because I just had my gallbladder removed on Tuesday. It's a horrible, nasty bitter taste. It makes me insane.

The reason this happens is because without a gallbladder you now have a slow trickle of bile always going into your intestines. It's weaker than a person with a gallbladder but it's constant. That is why it makes it's way back up your throat when you sleep. This is extremely common after gallbladder removal and should pass within a number of weeks (maybe months) once your body adjusts to not having the gallbladder anymore.

Best wishes.

Thanks Missy. That hadn't occurred to me. The gallbladder was (in my mind) a side thing to the main surgery, so I don't think much about it.

The sour taste starts in the early evenings, and is with me all night. I'm okay in the early part of the day, and I'm hoping that whatever is causing it, goes away sooner than later

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
