How long after surgery will I be bed ridden?

Recommended Posts

I am booked for May 15th. I have been researching and researching. Sometimes I think I am getting too prepared to point that I am beginning to be paranoid. I am just wondering how long I should be expecting to be laid up after surgery. I had a Tummy Tuck and breast left 6 years ago and I had such a hard time after surgery. Firstly, the codeine I was taking for pain made me vomit. (try vomiting after a tummy tuck..pure hell) and I had bad gas for about a week. I am just wondering if this surgery will be be as bad? I am terrified of going through that again. Any thoughts?

I am 9 days post op and was only really in bed on surgery day and was up and aroud fine. I was in bed days 3&4 because of nausea..but went back to school and work on tuesday with lifting restrictions.

Good luck!!!!

Honestly, you won't be bed ridden at all. They get you up and walking within hours of surgery and encourage you to walk as much as possible.

I've had a c-section, hernia repair surgeries, and just this week gallbladder removal. Of all the surgeries I've had Lap Band was by far the easiest and fastest recovery. I had it on a Friday and by Wednesday I was back to my normal routine. I didn't even take the pain pills after I got out of the hospital because I didn't need them.

You'll do fine.

Hopefully not at all. The quickest way to recover is to be up and around. You may sit and rest in a recliner, I was only in bed to sleep.< /p>

I had lap band w/plication on a Monday morning at 9am. I was home by 2:30 in the afternoon of the same day. I took the prescribed meds once and then moved to liquid tylenol. I slept a lot the first day but was up and about walking several times. On day 2 I was up walking around. I think on Day 3, I went to a thrift store shopping with my mom to "walk out" some of the trapped gas in my shoulders. On day 4, I went to a 3 hour workshop with friends. I was back to work on Day 8. I have had 2 c-sections and this was an easy recovery. The worst part of my surgery was that my largest incision got an infection about 2 weeks out. I still have a small scab on that incision site. My surgery date was January 21. I go for my first fill on Monday. Best of luck with your surgery!

I am with I also got sick from pain meds with my Tummy Tuck. This was a walk in the park compared to my tummy tuck. You will do fine. Just a heads up I did get sick with this sx too and had to call for anti nausea meds so you might want to ask for them a head of time. :)

You will be up right away. Had mine last year May 30th, a Wednesday, and long Memorial weekend was back at work Tuesday! Just felt like I had done 100 sit ups! As long as you don't lift anything right away you'll be good but the sooner you get moving the better. Good luck and welcome to a whole new world!!

My surgery was done at 3:30pm on Monday, and I was in bed most of the day on Tuesday. I walked the halls a little bit, but was in so much pain. Possibly because I had a few things done; lap band with plication, repair of hiatal hernia, and gallbladder removal. When I got home from the hospital, I spent most of Wednesday in bed, but I think the liquid Vicodin had a lot to do with that. Now I'm up and around, but rest when I feel tired.

Everyone is different, so it's difficult to know how you will respond. At five days out, I feel like I turned a corner today. I caught up on work for a few hours this morning, then got really tired. But every day is better and better.

Wow. Thanks everyone, I feel 100 x's better. I'm so excited to get started, but still very nervous. Your words of encouragement are a world of difference for me.

there's a book called living with the LapBand.. It gives great detail from pre-diet, pre-op to post-OP. Pretty much explains what happens day of surgery. I was banded on monday and already out and about shopping today. The gas was the worst part. Get some prune juice. Good luck

I took nine days off of work for mine, but wish I wouldn't have.. I was going crazy. The day after surgery I went shopping at the grocery store, day 3 I went to target for like 2 hours just to walk, infact I think I went shopping every single day I was home hahha... my bank account hated me.

The only reason I am happy I took that much time off is the fact of the food temptation after about a week. I think I would have ended up eating if I went back to work any sooner. goodluck! you'll be fine.

Also! I didn't take any pain meds once I was home. Super easy!

I knew the pain meds would make me nauseous so I asked for a prescription when I got my oxycodone. I was up and around a few times a day alone with resting in bed for about 3 days. By the 5th day I went shopping and a week post op I was painting my daughter's room and trim. I had issues with trapped gas and tried EVERYTHING for weeks. Eventually it went away but I still get it on occasion but that pain is more anxiety or something pushin on my diaphram. Went back to work two weeks post op but the pain in my left shoulder was too much so I took a few more days off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
