Pregnant and port out of skin!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm 16 weeks pregnant, banded October 2011. I had an infection at the port site November 2012. Doc gave me antibiotics, thought that took care of it. January 2013 infection was back, worse. The doctor had to do an incision to drain it and apply silver nitrate. Did silver nitrate for eight weeks but to no avail! He will have to go in after I have the baby in September to completely clean out any infection that could be left is what the final decision was. I was left with a small hole of flesh over the port.

Now...I just discovered that the hole has worn down to the port. So that means the port is sticking out of my skin!!!!!!!! I am horrified, mortified, scared, and confused!!!!!! I go back to the doctor in a few days. Has anyone heard of anything like this??? If so, what was the outcome??? Is this common??? Did my doc do something wrong??? Any information would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

If this were me at this point I would probably have it taken out already. Even with the weight ive lost the port if right there now under the skin and it freaks me out. Definitely get to the dr asap.

So sorry to hear you are going through this, especially when this is a time you should be happy and excited. I think you should also consult your OB on this, as that infection could spread and you dont want to risk that sweet baby. Sending a prayer out for you

A port infection can be a sign of more serious band problems. An infection of this duration and resistance should have been cultured long ago and dealt with aggressively. I would insist on being seen by a different band doctor, since yours doesn't seem to be alarmed by your situation. If your band doctor isn't cooperative, get your PCP/OB doctors involved, since this is an issue of overall health of you and your baby. Surgery to deal with this is a lot easier now than it will be in another month, when the uterus reaches the umbilicus.

Best of luck, please keep us posted.

Thanks so much for your responses, info, and sentiments! I have seen my surgeon and consulted with my obstetrician. Tomorrow morning I will have Fluid removed from my band, the port removed, and the are treated for infection. Although, there are no signs of infection, just a precaution. The port will be replaced after I deliver the baby.

I will keep you all posted. Thanks again!!!

That's good you're getting the port removed. I'm not pregnant and mine sticks out so I can imagine being pregnant! You've got to be cautious so you don't harm your baby in any way. At least you have the option of getting your port replaced after the baby is born. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
