Mine was discovered several years ago when I was being treated/diagnosed for acid reflux. My esophogus had by then needed healing which the Prilosec did. I took it for several years. I have since learned what "not" to eat. Other than the obvious spicy foods--which for this "Northerner" could be taco bell; I can't eat lettuce of all things! I had my gall bladder taken out a year ago for pallups, my gastroenterologist said an overweight person should not take Prilosec or the like for any length of time--can't remember why. But I stopped right away. I take it only when I have hearburn now, which isn't very often. I'm going to ask about getting it fixed when I have my surgery.

I found mine when I had mentioned to the Doc that I was taking rolaids a lot at night. And that I was occasionaly waking up with reflux in my throat. He then sent me in for an upper GI. I asked if I could just live with it and he said no. That I would some night no wake up witht the reflux and that I would aspirate. So I went in for surgery. I would describe it as just about having the band surgery done. They pump you with gas and go in thru the same incisions and the band surgery. It took about 40 minutes and I went home about 2 hours later. I have never had any problems since.

My insurance covered the whole thing.

I didn't know I had a hernia until the surgeon told me she fixed it when she banded me. I'm so glad she did so. I lived on Rolaids and Tums for years, and then got relief with Prilosec but I do know that it's not good to take it long term. Less than a week after the band was placed, I was done with antacids and all other related meds. I have no more heartburn, no reflux, no nothing. What a pleasure to not be popping tums anymore or waking up during the night with that awful feeling like the food is coming back up..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
