Fiber supplements???

Recommended Posts

Anyone take any Fiber supplements? I am worried that the increase in Protein in my diet is going to make things difficult in the restroom. I am scheduled for surgery on April 5th. I start my preop diet on Monday. I bought some chewable fiber supplements but not sure about these for after surgery. Any advice or suggestions in this area would be appreciated.

Straight after surgery when you are on full liquids, you can't expect fewer bowel movements because you aren't putting any solids into your body. Once you are back to a normal diet, focus on getting your fibre from natural sources such as fresh fruit and vegetables. Remember to for plenty of Fluid in as well and you should be fine.

Post-op I would say no gelling type fiber drinks like metamucil. I had an incident and it was completely uncomfortable, had to PB it.

Although I have lots of Protein ( usually 60-80 grams) I still fit in my fruits veggies. I try having salads for lunch with 1 cup of lettuce or spinach with chicken, imitation crab, egg, ground Turkey or beef. I always try to have a fruit also. Canned fruit with cottage cheese or a fresh fruit. I'm pretty regular. My only problem was right after surgery cause there was nothing to digest from all the liquid

If you do have problems, my doctor put me on Miralax half dose daily. It comes in generic and works wonders.

I am mainly worried about immediately following surgery during the liquid and mushy stage. I'm hoping my Dr says I can have smoothies because I LOVE green smoothies and I'm sure that will help.

I didn't "go" for 3 days post op either, but on the 4th day it happened, it was also much easier to go when I stopped the prescription pain killers. Good luck!!!!

I chew two fiber gummies and put fiber powder in my coffee every morning to stay regular.

I used to drink a tea from Yogi - get regular, and used to work wonders! Would a laxative tea be too bad in this beginning?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
