Liquids getting stuck? Whate wrong?

Recommended Posts

I'm day 8 pre-op and I had some of a Protein Shake and sugar-free pudding which is what is in the list from the dr and I feel so uncomfortable with hiccups! Is it because I'm still recovering? Did I eat too much or too fast for still being in the recovery phase? Just trying to figure out what's wrong. I hate feeling so uncomfortable so soon.

Even shakes and soft foods need to consumed slowly. You will feel uncomfortable drinking too fast, especially when you are still recovering from surgery. It takes weeks for the swelling in and around your stomach to go down. Just take it slowly. I'm 6 weeks post-op and still am learning to do that. Congrats on your surgery.

Your healing, and you might have taken too big a swallow. Try to slow it down. Also, when I get hiccups... that means I'm full. Even though you have only taken two bites.. you might be full... Invest in a lot of little containers to save the other 3 bites that are left over from your pudding or whatever it is. haha It will be frustrating, but you need to realize now that you are never gonna eat like you did before... you will never have what your mind is sure is a portion size.,,,, a portion size for a banded person is sometimes only 3 bites... so make em count!!!

another thing... I can't eat anything solid before noon, sometimes not even yogurt or pudding... that's the time my band has designated for waking up... I get up at 6 a.m... my band gets up at noon!! ( like my son ) haha

I had this feeling up until about 3 weeks post op. I didn't really call it "stuck" as I didn't PB or have it come back up. It did just sit there for a few minutes. It is frustrating....but now is the time to eat very slowly (even pudding, yogurt, etc.) Learn the signals from your body. Hiccups, burping. For me it's a small burp sensation. This is your body telling you to put away what your eating. My head doesn't always want to accept this but my body is the boss now. Everyday will get better and better and then you will realize that it can hold more and more food and then another mental battle will ensue.

Be patient! You are doing great!

I would not call it getting stuck....when that happens you will know it.....

Think of a funnel....if you pour even Water too fast, it will accumulate in the upper section as it passes through the marrow opening slowly....this is what you are experiencing....and that feeling you are getting is your band telling you to slow it down...something we have to learn to live with.....

Some people feel liquids pass directly and quickly through the band..they do not, unless you have little to no restriction...

it can also mean your not chewing sufficiently and swallowing too big of bites...when it comes to solid foods....

All these bad practices can lead to dilation....

Everything...from food to Water, has to be slow and steady.....

Slow down and if it continues call the doctor. You do not want to end up dehydrated.

Thank you all so much for the advice. I def need to slow down even more with my bites and take smaller sips. Thanks again.

Just remember that in the beginning, it's supposed to take 30-40 mins to get in 4- 5 oz of Fluid. Maybe look into getting a smaller blender ball container that is 12 oz. Everything is still de-stressing from surgery. And every stage is so personal to how your body feels. Just try sips that are a little slower, or look at how many oz. you are drinking in a 20 min time frame. This might help you long run and remember to drink slower.

Congrats on your newly placed band and Cheer to all the Banded Success! :)

What the others said is true. Even liquids need to be taken slowly, as b-52 said it is like a funnel, and you need to sip even liquids. Best wishes, Karen

Another thing to take into consideration is making sure to take the full minute between swallows when taking your pills. I didn't get liquid prescriptions, I got pills, they got stuck day 3 post-op and I had to have 1cc removed from the band. It was instant relief!

So I am learning the hard way. It doesn't matter what you swallow, make damn sure you wait that minute between swallows.

As far as just drinking Water, I still have to wait because I get a burbling noise as the Water goes down and the excess air comes out.

It's all a weird experience. Gotta get used to it though.

Oh my, getting my medicine down every morning is a 30 minute project. Break the pills into small, small pieces...take one small piece and swish it down with a small sip of water....wait a minute or so.....take another swig of Water just to be sure the meds went down.....rinse and repeat. I have five pills every morning that are broken into about 25 pieces. I know I'm probably being overly cautious but I don't want any problems. I look forward to the day I won't need these meds any more!

Nope, not overly cautious. It's the worst feeling when a pain pill gets stuck at full size. I would definitely break the pills and do it that way rather than go through that escapade again.

This is my experience right now, 4 days post op. What I eat or drink just "sits there for a bit". It's not annoying at all, just different. When people ask me if I can tell I have the band in, I tell them yes, my food just can't be downed quite like before. And that's a good thing!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
