Post Op Diet?? What was on your menu?

Recommended Posts

I have my surgery date set for April 5th. I start my pre-op diet on March 25th. I am just curious what the immediate post op diet is like? I have heard liquids for a few weeks, then "mushies"? What was on your post op menu for the first several weeks?

I had to be on full liquids for 2 weeks after. I had Protein Shakes, strained Soup, sugar free Jello and pudding, and lots of greek yogurt (with no fruit chunks). For mushies, I did tuna and canned chicken mushed up with a bit of light mayo, refried Beans, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese topped with a bit of Tomato sauce.

I'm 1 week pre-op and for the first week is "thin liquids" - Chicken/beef broth, Protein Shakes with NO milk, crystal light, sugar free Jello, sugar free kool-aid,coffee and tea. The 2nd week for me is starting tomorrow, "thicker liquids",I can start having Tomato Soup, and other Soups without chunks, plus anything from week 1. Week 3 "soft foods"-Soft fruit, cooked mushy green veggies, soft scrambled eggs, baked fish, sugar free pudding, chicken or tuna blended with light mayo. Week 4 is when solid foods come in- 1 Protein Shake for Breakfast, then small meals for lunch and dinner, the good lean Proteins and a veggie. I've noticed a lot of DR's approved post op foods differ. Some people are allowed to have creamed soups, pudding in the first couple of weeks, I'm not. They also want me to have at least 3 Protein shakes a day in the first couple of weeks and drink 2 qts of Water. I'm also told not to drink milk for the first week post op, then in the 2nd week I can start having soy or almond milk. Like I said, every Dr is different and gives different do's and don'ts. Good luck!

I misread my post-op diet instructions, thinking they said "Clear Liquids + Protein shakes for 4 weeks" and almost starved. I added Tomato Soup to the mix after the first week cuz I was so weak. After 4 weeks, I started mashed potatoes (totally yummy at the time), yogurt, scrambled eggs, and refried Beans with melted cheese. 6 mths later, I reread my instructions. They said "Full liquids for 4 weeks, including yogurt, creamed Soups, puddings. The whole time I thought I was cheating!

Couldn't look at Tomato Soup for a couple of years after spending 4 weeks eating it 4x a day. I was literally starving and only lost maybe 4 lbs during that 4 weeks. You can do this tho. Most people don't spend 4 weeks on it like i did. I( have a very conservative doctor. I had no pre-op doet, however.

Good luck to you!

Marci

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
