Help please. Is my band to tight?

Recommended Posts

I haven't had a fill since before October but starting last week Ive been having a lot of trouble keeping food down. I vomit everytime I eat. I have been eating some of the wrong foods so I thought that was the problem but i couldnt keep down even yogurt. I thought the band loosened over time so I dont understand why Im just now having trouble. Does vomiting actually make the band tighten? If I go back to protien shakes for a while would that help? Thank you for any advice

I would call your doctor ASAP and let them know what's going on. I haven't been banded yet, and can't comment from experience. But what you're experiencing doesn't sound normal, and all the vomiting can cause the band to slip. Best to get it checked out sooner than later.

Vomitting over a long(or short) period of time can cause your band to slip. Even though you have a pouch and a lower stomach, they are still one organ. Vomitting causes your stomach to convulse violently to eject food in your lower stomach. This can rip the sutures holding the band in place away. Your band can then migrate up or down.

PB'ing is a different story.

"Does vomiting actually make the band tighten?"

Every time you get stuck or vomit you're stomach lining presses hard against the band. The band does not tighten but the lining in your stomach can swell from the trauma of vomitting in the band area. The swelling makes the stoma smaller, i.e. extra tightness.

did the same thing but thought I had stomach virus but the band slipped and I had to have all fill removed in hopes to provent removal. I was told then if I vomit once to call in next time, believe me I will. If they have to go in and fix it or replace it , it is never the same it fits best the first time .CALL YOUR SURGON NOW.

Are you Vomiting? As in are sick with some type of stomach ailment?

There is a difference between vomiting, and regurgitation from a tight band....a big difference....

Your last fill was in October...it would be strange that all of a sudden , all this time later you are having problems with the band being too tight, although I would not rule out something band related.....

But again, you say "Vomiting" exactly what is it do you mean.....people tend to misuse that term here frequently.....

Although I have been stuck and spit everything up several times...I have yet to been sick and vomit...to be honest, it scares me......

If I were to get sick, I would call y surgeon ASAP.....if I am traveling, which I do often, I carry my own syringe to do my own un-fills and avoid a catastrophe....in a foreign country....

Thank you so much for the imput. when i say vomiting I mean i will be eating and suddenly feel uncomfortable in my chest like the foods not going down then have to go to the bathroom and throw up chunks of food. It happens all the time now but I thought maybe i was eating wrong because several of the times its happened it was bread but then when it happened w/ yogurt I started to worry. Water stays down as long as i dont drink to much to fast. I havent had any problems until recently and I just thought maybe once i started vomiting that it was causing the band to tighten or swell. I dont have insurance so was trying to avoid going back to doctor unless I have to. Thanks

I would say to check with you doctor at least by phone and go to liquids for a couple of days to let the swelling go down. You are probably swollen in your band area from the initial episode and the each one after that has just irritated the problem, hopefully after a couple of liquid days you can move to mushy and soft for a couple of days and then resume as normal. I hope everything works out for you soon!

Like B52 said, people use vomit incorrectly here all the time.

Vomit: Violent rejection of food in lower stomach. Full blown heaving where the stomach convulses and shoots food out your mouth.

PB: Productive Burp...This is where we mildly regurgitate food that has not passed through the band to the lower stomach. Still not something we want to be doing but is much less harmful than a outright vomit. Usually a sign we've eaten too quick, too much or failed to chew properly.

Which is it?

Sounds like you're just regurgitating, BUT you do need to see your doctor. To all of a sudden begin having trouble keeping food down, you're either eating too fast, taking too large of a bite, have really irritated your band, or you could very well have a slip. Only your doctor can diagnose a slip.

My band slipped after only two incidences of vomiting (the forceful expulsion of food from the lower stomach). While slipping that early on is not the norm, it can definitely happen.

If your throwing up "chunks" of food, your obviously not chewing enough. I've had the lapband a year this month and trust me, we tend to get comfortable and the lapband has a way of reminding us very quickly exactly what the rules are..! Good luck

Hi. I am getting ready for replacement or revision due to being left overfilled for several years. At this point I am completely unfilled in order to settle things down but the daily throwing up (not full vomiting but more than just PB) really took a toll on my stomach, esophogous, and nutrient levels. I'm just chiming in to wish you luck in getting this resolved and urge you not to wait too long like I did because other problems will result. Be persistent about someone figuring out what the cause is and listening to you. I have been unfilled now for a month and have maintained with just a three pound weight gain. It is worth it to feel like a normal person again and I am looking forward to moving forward this Thursday with a replacement band or revsion.

Hi, I've had the same problem lately with tightness. It's been well over 4 months since my last fill and I was at good restriction. About two weeks ago I got incredibly tight and had slime with every solid I ate even though I chewed the heck out of it. It even got to a point I was sliming in my sleep. Yucky and scary! I asked around and found that sometimes allergies can cause the band to swell. I also suspect the solution I was using to whiten my teeth played a role as well. At any rate, I went to liquids for a few days, plus started taking a daily allergy pill. This has seemed to help and I am now able to eat solids again without the slime. I'm not able to eat much but at least I'm not running to the restroom after every meal. I really don't know what caused the sudden tightness but am thankful it's calmed down a bit. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
