allergies and acid reflux feeling

Recommended Posts

I have done great with my lapband...I have had my issues just like all others. But for most part my suffering and adjusting to the life style change has been so worth it. However about 4 months ago I got a allergy infection. The mucus and drainage has been an overwhelming amount. It travels so slow that all food and medication are getting trapped in the drainage. Which as a huge side effect to that is I feel as if I have acid reflux. Medication and food gets trapped then starts burning my esophagus. It isn't uncommon to now throw up 10 times a day to remove mucus alone.

I was at a 5 1/2 now my fill is a 2 1/2.

Anyone else experienced anything remotely like this?? If so words of wisdom would be great.

Are you on allergy meds. I have major allergy issues, but mine are seasonal. When they start acting up in the spring and fall I use a nasal spray. Other times a year I clean out my sinuses by using simply saline. It's not pretty nor fun, but it really does help with this issue. Mine also make me feel like I have reflux and make my throat sore and make me nauseated. I have thrown up thankfully though.

Talk to an allergist and get some suggestions. People with severe allegeries can be helped a great deal by meds. My allergies have been know to cause my eyes to swell shut from presure. I also had a horrid infection a few years ago in my sinuses that they treated with high powered antibiotics that then due to some many antiobiotics went into a yeast infection in my sinuses - let me tell you that sucked. I was told to do the cleansing thing with saline and take the sprays during my peak allergery season.

I would find an expert allergist and talk with them. It is ot good to be throwing up so much even without a band. I hope you find relief soon!

I met with a allergy specialist yesterday and had testing. Today I received a steriod shot...so hopefully things will get better. However hot tea feels like it cant even go down. I hate feeling this miserable and do not want to damage my band.

Good Luck with your unfill! I go in tomorrow to have my band either adjusted or removed. I am hoping for adjustment, but will have to wait and see, praying and keeping fingers crossed.

IF I can get it adjusted, I will be sure to listen to my system and be more aware of my limitations... and of course, follow ALL the rules this time.

Was unable to adjust and save my lapband... so it had to be removed. I am SO worried that I will gain back the weight, it's almost haunting me.

My only advice to give to others is to listen to your Doctor, your body, and read, read, read. I should have known that I was going to damamge the band when I was so ill with allergies, then the acid reflux. It is not normal if you lay down at night, only to be woken by a clear acid bile coming up into your mouth. See your Dr. right away... go for a unfil, if that doesn't solve the issue... have a scan ran. Sometimes a unfill will help for a week or so but it comes back.. so request a scan. Also, don't eat before bedtime. I almost always didn't eat 4-5 hours before bedtime... just to prevent issues (plus it isn't wise to eat and go to bed... turns to fat).

Hopefully I won't need another band, Dr. said it would be 6 months before he'd even consider doing another band on me.

Good Luck to all

Even though I had a hernia repaired at the same time as Lapband surgery, my family doctor asked me to take a acid reducer pill every other day, Keeps me in check. Probably some of the foods I still eat.

Best wishes

Was unable to adjust and save my lapband... so it had to be removed. What explanation did your doctor give you as to WHY he removed the band It sounds like something else was going on perhaps with the esophagus and not just Sinus issues? I am SO worried that I will gain back the weight, it's almost haunting me. you have a very legitimate worry, sorry that your having t go through this. :(

My only advice to give to others is to listen to your body,Excellent advise THANK YOU!! TOO often the medical profession negates our feelings :angry:and read, read, read. I should have known that I was going to damamge the band when I was so ill with allergies, then the acid reflux. Hopefully I won't need another band, Dr. said it would be 6 months before he'd even consider doing another band on me.Have you read about having any other WLS? I'd be hesitant to have another band placed after the issues that you've already experienced, Depending on WHY? the first band was removed is a BIG factor as to whether another band will be of any value to you .Just my opinion, I wish you Luck on your continued journey ~~~~~

He explained to me shortly after my procedure, so I was a bit groggy (will go in this week for a follow-up, and ask more questions). But basically when I got the allergy infection, I had so much drainage that food would NOT go down. I was unable to swallow needed medication, so would have to chew the medication up and let dissolve in mouth. When I would try to eat, it was basically held up by all the thick drainage from my allergy infection. So, I would throw up... ALOT. Probably at the beginning if I would have recognized what I was doing to my band due to all the vomiting, I would have had it totally unfilled until I healed. But I did not, and suffered the consequence for it too.

The Dr. did say that I could have another lap band in approx 6 months, but advises me to try to keep my weight off and not depend on a tool. When my band was functioning properly it was great. I was able to eat, but only small amounts and of course no bread (occasionally maybe a slice of thin crust super crispy pizza).

Even though I had to have my band removed (with huge regret), I have NO regrets to the lap-band surgery. I suffered like we all do trying to make the lifestyle changes. But the reward was SO worth it!

I will do all I can to watch my intake and try to get more exercise. However, if I do gain the weight back or start to gain it back when my 6 months gets here... I will have another band installed. This time, I will listen to my body and be persistent with the Dr. to tell him what my body is telling me. At times the Dr.'s would make me feel guilty for wanting to have a unfill, said I was just wanting to eat. But it wasn't that... it was due to the drainage that was keeping my food, Vitamins and needed medication from going down.

Just listen to your body, and read any and all advice you can get from others. I am so glad I started reading (however it was too late for me), it was nice to know I wasn't going crazy by some of the issues I was having... they are common issues that most of us experienced.

Good Luck to All!

wow this was alot of information. i am going on my 2yr with the lapband and have had to have 3 unfills due to my allergies. My doctor has only advised me to get some over the counter meds with decongestant in them and to take them daily. i am currently just filled and am having trouble due to the mucus drainage. the thought of having the band removed after dealing with this since last September 2013 is a welcomed one but my surgeon hasn't recommended that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
