Help Scared!! Gallbladder removel during lap band surgery

Recommended Posts

I have been approved for surgery and its scheduled for April 4th! Yah! It is something I really want, but Im terrified of the surgery (death in particular). I read about all these complication and all the people who end up having it removed and now Im having 2nd thoughts. Im not afraid of pain, just the thought of not being here for my 3 babies.

The doctor is going to remove my gallbladder at the same time, I also read that this may not be safe? anyone else have this done at same time? This is building more anxiety.

I have been having problem with gallbladder for a long time now (2 years) its un-comfortable but not life threatening. I know allot of people have gotten this surgery w/ lapband done and also my surgeon is experienced doing it, it make sense to do it together.. he will already be in there, why not just spend a few minutes more and take care of the gallbladder.

I read there is bigger risk of infection. I talked to my surgeon and ofcourse he confimed all the things I read as a risk factor. I just wonder if anyone out there has had this? and what they recommend. Im already scared, and now Im getting closer to surgery and having all these 2nd thoughts. Im not a gambler, this is soo hard for me.

I've not experienced that, but I do know it's extremely common for people to have to have their gallbladder removed after major weight loss. If you're already having problems now, it makes sense your doctor would want to remove it at the same time- before it becomes much more serious with weight loss.

Also, this would also mean going under anesthetic once rather than twice for two separate surgeries. That alone reduces your risks of issues.

Granted this is just my opinion, but given all the facts I would want both done at once if I were in your shoes.

Best wishes!

I'm having surgery on 3/25, and he's taking out my gallbladder at the same time. I have gallstones, and though they don't bother me, he'll remove it to avoid a second surgery down the road. It's pretty common for large amounts of weight loss to cause stones, so many doctors like to take out the gallbladder at the time of surgery, to avoid issues down the road. For me, I'll be glad to be rid of it. Sometimes I do have problems, but nothing life threatening.

My surgeon will not remove the gallbladder during lb surgery; higher complications rate.

If you need it out do it first.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
