Rude awakening

Recommended Posts

I went to the dr today for my first visit since op on feb 26. I have only lost 10 lbs since then, which was a little disappointing to me. I told the dr i was watching calories and getting in all my Protein. I have been eating about 1500 calories a day and he said no wonder you're not losing! I didn't know that was too much and he said It should be around 800. He said in about a month he will give me a fill. I told him I didn't feel full and feel hungry so he said its normal because i have no restriction now until I get a fill. I know this is going to be hard...how has everyone else fared during this period?

Well to be honest, if I only ate 800 calories a day I wouldn't lose weight and my doctor would get on my case for eating too little. When my calories were under 1000 per day for awhile, my weight loss drastically slowed. I have to eat between 1000-1200 to lose optimally.

I guess it goes to show how surgeons' ideas of what works can vary drastically.

Since your body only needs about 1600-1800 calories to maintain, 1500 wouldn't make much of a dent but 10 lbs is very good.

First, congrats on getting banded

Second, congrats on losing 10lb..the second you think that's unsatisfactory is when self defeat settles in real quick

Third, 1500 is alot of cals. True everyone is different but the average caloric intake by bandsters is 800-1200. I think towards the lesser side when starting out newly banded. I'm surprised that in less than a month you are already transitioned to full solids and able to eat 1500 cals. We had such strict portion sizes that we lost nearly 30 lbs right off the bat. But we struggled to get 800 cals in doing so. Anyway, this is why you see such huge variance in what others are losing because you have a different transition and nutrition plan.

Stick with it, try to get down to 1200 until you have your fill. Once you feel restriction this should not be an issue

When I was on liquids only, I struggled to get above 600 calories a day. Now I'm on purée and I'm between 900-1000. I'm thinking 1500, while not a ton for regular folks, is quite a bit for a newly banded person. That is probably the reason for slower weight loss. Try cutting it to 1000-1200 and see how you feel, maybe?

I was banded on 2/19, and I have no fill on board either. When I'm hungry, I sip on my Protein Shake and it holds me. I think I probably COULD eat just about anything and a lot of it if I let myself--- the key is in limiting. I keep telling myself that I didn't go through this surgery just to eat poorly all over again.

Also, I use "My Fitness Pal" faithfully so I know exactly what I'm eating.

Good Luck!

I asked the dr today exactly how big is the pouch, and he said there isn't one until i have a fill....?.? The only time i struggled or felt uncomfortable was the first 2 days and now everything feels normal as if i don't even have the band. Nothing bothers me as far as what I have been eating. I only started on mushy foods and fish this week, buit before that I think all the cals were from canned Soup, yogurt etc, i probably had more than 4 ounces and that's what is slowing me down. I read the link that Mis73 suggested and some of it described me and my feelings about wht the band should do, but I get it now!!

No pouch? I guess that's one way to look at it. Since there's no saline in your band food passes right on through so in reality you don't have a pouch till you start geting fills. Makes sense.

I was on 1000 calories a day post op.... I tried not to go below that but all drs are different.

You have lost 10 lbs in a few weeks... I would say that pretty darn good! Stick with it!

My doctor says to weight out 3 oz of Protein. I would try that and see if you are eatung to much. Studies show those who estimate rather than measure will eat too much.

Is someone is 400 pounds 1600-1800 is not going to maintain there weight eating at this calorie level. The less you weigh the less caloric intake you need to maintain your weight

I know there is the one cup rule but every time I measure it out , seems like a lot .. Regular cup used to measure flour or sugar is accurate correct ?

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
