Where is the strangest place/person you discussed your lapband?

Recommended Posts

I had one today.

I went for my annual mamogram. On the paper work they ask if you have gained or lost more then 10 pounds in the last year. So naturally I put yes.

When I was finally led in to the torture chamber, the technician was going over my paperwork and ask if I had lost or gained. I told her I had lost 23 pounds. She ask me how. I figured she would see my scars anyway, so I told her I had lapband surgery. She said really! She then told me she had her stomach stapled like 20 years ago, and how awful the experience was and showed me her hidious scar. She also told me a coworker died from the stomach stapling. She didn't know anything about lapband, so I told her everything I knew plus I told her about the wonderful support network of lapband talk. She said she wished it was around when she had hers.

Next thing I know she was leading me out of the room back to the lockers. She hugged me and said I probably won't recognize you next time you come in. It was so sweet and special...then I realized...I just had a mamogram and didn't feel a thing!

Not a strange place but the other day I went out for dinner with a gastric bypass friend. It was a little bar & grill and we were the only ones there (until 8 pm when the local's came in) so the cook/owner came out to see if everything was okay. We said the food was yummy, which it was but there was so much left on our plates that the cook kinda went "eh" So we both explained that we had stomach surgery and couldn't eat it all....she was like ohhhhhhhhhhhh and you saw a sign of relief in her face LOL, guess she felt we didn't like the food. It make me feel awkward but people have been pretty good about it. I don't tell anyone about my surgery but in a case like that, I felt bad and had to tell the cook LOL.

That's happened to me a few times, either at restuarants (with concerened waitress'es and cook's) or going to a friends for dinner.

Funniest was when I was at a friends house working on their PC (for several hours) and the ladies two daughters and one of their boyfriends all came over for dinner. I was "guilted" in to joining them. I put a small portion of spaghetti and sauce on my plate and heard "Seriously, we have a ton of food here. Don't be shy".

When I told them it had nothing to do with how much I would've liked to have eaten (volume wise especially how good it was); as much as how much I knew I could eat; and why - it floored them all.

The one daughter's boyfriend (as I got up from the table) jokingly asked if he could have my "expected seconds, or for that matter my expected firsts". lmao

Lets seeeeee, WAWA, (gas station/deli store), I told the check out clerk, local bar, one of my DH's friends was commenting about how much weight I'd lost and how'd I do it, yadayada, I told him the Adkins diet, well it was easier and it was loud in there and I think he was drunk, LMAO.

I've pretty much told anybody that would listen, unless they were thin.

I just told the groomer that takes care of my kitties. I have them goomed twice a year and she asked how I had managed to lose so much in the last 6 months. She is heavy and I know that she has struggled with her weight for a long time. We have been clients for over 3 years and she loves my furbabies almost as much as I do, so I shared. I even let her feel my port, she asked and I was fine with it. I also told the nurse as my daughters pediactric group. It was weird explaining a medical proceedure to a nurse. But the strangest place was at the tattoo shop that I get my work done at, I have told several people there about it, there are a ton of people there and most of them know me so I am comfortable sharing there. ~Mandy

On the side of a highway while giving them a speeding ticket (actually I gave them a written warning, not a ticket). They had gastric bypass 3 years earlier and was speeding because he knew he had eaten some fruit and fruit usually makes him dump. So he was speeding home from a business meeting dinner.< /p>

I was at the dentist & the front desk lady went on & on about how fabulous I looked. I walked by her desk 3 differnent times & the third time she pulled me to the side & said - "You have to share your secret!" So, I did. I told her EVERYTHING including showing her my port. HA. I WAS IN THE DENTISTS OFFICE!!! I haven't even show my sisters my port. ;)

the most awkward place was with my brother in law.....i feel more comfortable telling complete strangers then him. He has had a weight problem too and I could just feel him judging me. I didn't even bring it up my MIL. ick....*shiver* don't want to relive that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
