Having difficulty telling if I'm hungry

Recommended Posts

So I was banded on 2/28 and I'm starting to have a hard time identifying if I'm hungry or if I'm just feeling discomfort. I can easily identify head hunger because I can dismiss it by engaging in something mental but when I feel a tightness in my gut I can't tell if It's hunger or not. Sometimes if I drink something or take in some calories it goes away other times it gets worse and I need to use the restroom shortly afterwards. It's easier to usually just ignore it.

It's getting so hard to tell I've been testing my blood sugar to see if it's low (sometimes it is other times it isn't)

Anyone else experience this?

What does your physical hunger feel like?

Actually yes. I thought I was odd. I am 9 months post and still have it at times, but it is much better now. I do not have diabeties, but my suger does drop at times, so I keep some trail mix in my bag at all times.

I have less issues with this when I make sure to combine complex carbs and Proteins in my meals. Like a whole grain english muffin with low sodium PB. If I need a snack- apple with pb. My tummy use to crap and hurt right before lunch time, then I would eat and it would go away. As I got more fills and started watching closer to what foods make my body feel good these issues lessed.

Good luck.

Good luck with this. Took me over a year to recognize the difference. For me, I have to physically stop and actually listen or feel my stomachto see if it's hunger or me wanting to chew on something. Most of the time it's head hunger. It's more of a discomfort felt in my stomach but my mind likes to F with me so I have to listen real hard. I'll drink some Water and go back to work and it goes away.

It can take time, and early on in the process, the gurgling noises are bowel sounds. Make sure you are drinking enough liquids and going regularly. If not, add Fiber, stool softner or Miralax to your regimen. Being stopped up can cause pains.

Same issue with me.. Head hunger vs real hunger. Sounds like it's a work in process. Wish there was an on/off switch.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
