1st week post op having hard time getting protein in

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days post op and still only able to get in about 16oz Protein Shake (4oz at a time through out the day) and then some popsicle, Water and 1 Jello. I get that full feeling so quick. Is this normal? A couple of drinks and I am full for an hour. If I try to take more in I get nauseous but I'm afraid of not getting enough Protein in. Each day I have been able to take a little more in. Just don't want to make myself weak or sick from not getting enough in.

Very normal! Focus on keeping hydrated, as your new stomach heals each day you will be able to add more Protein.

(hugs)

don't worry too much right now about protein.. it's all about healing for awhile. my Dr. said to not even worry about losing, just healing.. stay hydrated and rest....you will feel much better by next week....

Try drinking 3 oz of Protein Shake at the top of every hour while you are awake. That should equal enough Protein assuming you are awake for at least 12 hours a day. Smaller amounts more often worked for me. The rest of each hour I sipped Water, crystal lite, etc. Good luck.

what i did here (while i was just out of surgery and my dr okay'd it)

was i put my chocolate Protein Shake in freezer) and waited til it was slushy..and used a spoon and got my Protein in that way.....it tasted good, it was easy going down...but the other posters are right, this time is for healing...keep sipping and then keep doing it and each day as you heal and the swelling goes down, you will be able to drink more.....just hang in there...doing great.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
