Shoulder Pain 4 Weeks Post Op

Recommended Posts

I am down 35lbs since I was banded 4 weeks ago today but I am still having some pretty serious pain in my left shoulder. Could that still be related to the CO2? I sometimes have it when I feel gassy in my stomach. The dr's office thinks I could still be eating to fast but I am very cognizant of how many chews I need before I swallow. Has anyone had the pain for this long? I have a very high pain tolerance but if this doesn't stop in a couple of weeks then I am getting this thing out of me. Thanks in advance!!!

It's not the CO2 from surgery this long afterward, I'd guess your doctor's office is correct. You're likely either too fast or too big of bites- or a combination of both.

The band is positioned in such a way that the band dims the hunger signals from the Vagus nerve. When you overeat, eat too fast, or eat too big of a bite you can get shoulder pain due to the path of the Vagus nerve. If I had to guess, it sounds like that's what's happening with you.

This is what I experience every time I try to get a fill! It actually goes into my back, shoulder, ear, neck, and causes headaches! I've had my band for 6 years with no fills! I feel sorry for you! I also have a high pain tolerance, but this kicks my butt! Did the doctor add any Fluid in your band during surgery? Getting even that small amount out can make a big difference! Please keep me posted and let me know how everything turns out! Hang in there!

I was banded 1/30/13 and I still get left shoulder pain every once in a while. They told me that it could be a few things. From bloating of the stoma due to eating too fast or eating something gassy and its pushing on the diaphragm which has a direct line to the pain in the left shoulder to the line ftom the band to the port (can't think of the name for it sorry) which could rub against the diaphragm and then it sends a signal again to your shoulder. However, some times its just plain anxiety for me. I used to get the exact same pain but in my right shoulder until I started taking a maintenance antianxiety med. Which I stopped cuz I thought it was hindering my weightloss, when really, it was me. I've come to the conclusion that either I will have to live with this shoulder pain or try going back on my meds and see if that helps. Hope yours gets better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
