I had surgery Friday morning 3/8/13

I was told no cold liquids (I am an ice fiend)

And no straws.

Yesterday I had a horrible day. So much pain, and gas. I barely sipped Water and a little bit of broth.

Today more pain, still have not been able to burp or toot :(

Walked for 30 minutes.

Only been able to sip water and about 2 ounces of a Protein Shake.

Is this typical?

I keep reading about people drinking a lot. Everytime I drink I get pains in my shoulders and chest.

I feel whiney! Lol

LEft shoulder pain i am guessing which is normal for many. It is trapped gas. Some drink a lot most do not. Just keep sipping. Each day will be better

Try a hot pack on the shoulder for the pain, that's what they did when I was in hospital. I agree with zinhaa - it's trapped gas, Very normal for many. If you're concerned, call your surgeon's rooms and check in.

Hope you're feeling better real soon. :-)

That was my exact experience after surgery. I was advised to get gas x strips but those only worked once so my hubby purchased gas x chewable tablets and they were heavenly!!! I was able to "release" more "air" and felt amazing afterwards!!!!! I wasn't able to get all of my fluids in on the first two days and paid the price for it on day 4 when I attempted to go back to work. Make your self get in those liquids or at least close to the oz prescribed by your dr.

I also have preferred the chewables! They work great!

I used the Gas-x strips and they worked like magic within minutes of dissolving a strip the shoulder pain just vanished. Once I stopped taking my pain meds it was easier to simply pass gas and I didn't really need the strips anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
