I can't keep anything down all of a sudden!

Recommended Posts

My lap band was last year, February 29. It was been pretty much normal according to these boards and from past experiences of people I know. I've lost 55 pounds. 3 days ago I started not being able to keep food down and had trouble keeping drinks down, especially when I was taking my meds. Right now I can't keep any solid food down and very little liquid; especially with my pills. This has never happened before and if stress is a factor I'm about to have to have 4 ruptured discs in my neck fixed; so if stress contributes I definately have it. Also I take care of my 84 year old father and getting my sisters and brother to help with him while I'm down is a no for sure! I worry about the surgery and about the care of my father. I haven't mistreated my band so all of this throwing up all of a sudden has been a total surprise. What do I need to do? Is there anything to do? Could my band have slipped? I haven't mistreated it at all. Let me know anything to help. This is worrying me to death which is probably contributing to the situation. Thanks so much, Deb

When was your last fill? Have you been sick with a cold or flu?

I ask this because my wife had problems when sick, mucus really effects the operation of the band and kind of makes the restriction effect more. Her nurse told her to come in if she feels like she nude getting sick now order to perform a de-fill. Then once better do a re-fill.

The other thing us you could have had too big of a fill or you aren't chewing completely, or too big bites, or even wrong foods. It's worth calling your doctor about.

It could very well be stress, but even if that is the cause, you'll need some removed from your band until you're passed this stressful part of your life.

Unfortunately it could also be a sign of a slip, too.

Either way, you need to contact your surgeon immediately. If you can't keep fluids down, you need to go to the ER immediately.

Good luck.

Contact your surgeon or go right to the ER if you haven't already. All of a sudden not keeping anything down is a sign of a slipped band. I don't want to scare you, but you need to take this seriously. Hope you already are gettting medical attention. Please keep us posted on what's going on. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
