Have you guys run into any medical situations where the fact that you are banded complicated or altered your treatment?

I ask because I told a friend who is PA in and Emergency Room that I was getting banded and he was totally against it. He said that people with bands present doctors with difficulty. Any value to that?

The only difficulty we present is if they have to tube is into our stomach or pump our stomach.

When I had emergency surgery I had to have my band completely unfilled but it really wasn't any big deal.

I think as long as you're at a hospital with a bariatric surgeon on staff you don't have anything to worry about.

Thank you!

I have been trying to think of situations where the band would make something complicated or impossible. I imagine certain medications will be difficult ( large pills.)

That could be true, but most of the time there are alternatives to big pills too. I personally never have had a problem taking pills of any size.

I have not had any medical complications since being banded....I have spoken with ER people and one Doc in particular and they say they are not that familiar with the band and not always sure what to do....if you call that a complication....so they generally do a complete unfil....whether it is warranted or not...then instruct you to go see your Surgeon....

I have a friend who went to the ER, they were not sure if he was having cardiac issues or a CVA....they immediately did a complete un fill....

When I travel out of the country I carry a syringe with me with a large bore needle.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
