Post op gas still?? Whats going on??

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow is my 7th day post op, i have my appt tomorrow. I posted a thread a few days ago about back pain n gas. I still have severe back pain in the middle of my back. I also can not burp! I havent burped once n every time when i swallow my saliva it hurts cause i feel like i need to burp. This pain is driving me crazy! I tried the gas x pill n strips but the gas only comes out sometimes when i use the bathroom and i only do diarrhea. Did anyone have the same trouble i been going through? I am going nuts :(

No you're not going nuts. It can take a couple weeks for that gas pain to subside unfortunately.

The reason the gas x strips aren't working and you can't burp is because the gas isn't in your digestive system, it's in your abdominal cavity. The best thing you can do is walk as much as you can handle because it will help your body re-absorb it faster. Some also find a heating pad will help ease the discomfort.

I'm on day 4 and it is getting better and better. I still have a lot "moving" around and being on a strictly liquid diet it's no wonder things are coming out more liquidish too. (made up that word).

I on the other hand have been burping "etc." very regularly, not sure if that's funny or gross, but my digestive track sure seems to be working properly. I'm sure you will get more insight at your appoinement.

Good luck!!

Thank you! As I pre-op, I've always wondered why people recommend this--it just didn't make sense. (I remember gas pain from my two c-sections way back when, and I know that no form of gas med would've taken that pain away, for precisely the reason you cite here.)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
