What a great place

Recommended Posts

I have been lurking for quite awhile, and I've learned so much. I'm now at the point that I want to be banded for sure and I have it narrowed down to three doctors.

I want to thank all you posters. I am in awe of the amount of emotional and physical bravery I see on this site. You have been a wealth of information and inspiration, that has helped me with my decision.

Hi Debra,

Good luck with your financing search! I was a self pay, too and it was a wad of cash to come up with. That said, I would much rather have had this gift than a new car! Best of luck to you.

Hi Debra, Welcome to LBT! Congratulations on your decision to get the lapband. This site is a great resource. ;) Where are you going to be banded?

Thankyou Kim and Anwyn. Where I get the surgery done depends on my financing. Companies that provide financing for this type of thing don't do it for Canadians in Mexico. At least I haven't found one so far. If I do it here I will be able to get financing but it will cost several thousand more. I've still got lots of calls to make and I believe it will involve some financial jiggery pokery but I'm determined to do it. You're right, this site is indeed a great resource and it's given me the confidence to go ahead.

Where in Canada are you? If you're near Detroit at all, you might want to look into Henry Ford Hospital. Last I heard they were talking about coming up with a self-pay option. I think they were going to price the surgery at about $13K. They're about 15 miles from the Ambassador Bridge. Good luck to you!

Debra does your insurance pay for the surgery? I live in FL and thought my ins paid for it and found out after a month that it did not.

Mexico has been the cheapest by far for prices I found. We refinanced our home took out the cash to pay for the surgery and future surgery costs (fills flights etc)

Even though I live in FL I figured Mexico might be nice to have a short stay of vacation and a new experience.

Im paying $8,500 by Dr. Ortiz and $350 per ticket for flights.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
