I have Fibromyalgia... Anyone have the Band and FM? Pros/Cons??

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all of the feedback. I know I didn't start the thread, but since I'm still in approval phase, all of the feedback is very helpful. I have IBS as well, but found that a diet for IBS and Probiotics work the best for me. Actually, my surgeon thinks that the band will be helpful for IBS rather than impact it negatively because of the dietary changes that go with it. Maybe this is because I did very well with a diet specifically for IBS and Probiotics though. I also found out that I have some food intolerances that I did not know I had, like lactose. How can you be 29 and not know you cannot have lactose? Apparently, this girl can be!

BTW, the drops in blood pressure, I hadn't heard of before with fibro, but I keep having blood pressure drops that come with me feeling rather light headed at times. I will have to look into that because none of the doctors on my team could explain it!

The medication is the biggest worry that I have had so far. I wasn't sure which ones are allowed post-op but haven't had a chance to ask the doctor.

I was aware of the warning for people with autoimmune diseases. Before my surgery, I consulted my family doctor and my Rheumatologist about the contraindications of the band. Both doctors strongly encouraged me to get the band. Both doctors said the benefits of the Lap band out weights the risk. 11 months later and no problems. Another PRO: my need to take antiinflammatory meds has drastically decreased. I have not took a pain med in months. I still have pain but I can tolerate it without medicine. EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT. The good thing is the band is not permanent and can be removed if needed. Even if the band didn't help my symptoms, the weight loss has done wonders for me......I LOOK GOOD!!!!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
