How well do you tolerate soda after banding?

Recommended Posts

I am about to get banded this Friday and have read different things about how people tolerate soda after being banded. I LOVE a diet soda every once in a while and am just curious if I will no longer be able to drink it. I know I for sure can't for the first month. But what about after that?

It is proven that carbonated drinks stretch the sac and the chemicals and sweeteners in "diet" soda hinders weight loss! Defeats the whole purpose!

6 months post op and haven't tried soda. Strict instructions that carbonated beverages are gone from my world.

I disagree with everything that has been posted above but I'm not in the mood for arguing or typing the alternative view for the gazillionth time. A quick search will bring up lots of threads on this topic where both sides of the argument have been argued to death!

My doc told me never again to drink coke/diet coke. He said it can stretch the pouch and perhaps the band could slip, so to me in isnt worth it, at all.

That being said I used to drink almost 12 regular cokes a day....to be honest I do not miss it at all. I feel fantastic losing weight and drinking water!

I have done and will do exactly what my doctor instructed me to and will continue to have success with my weight loss.

Good luck on your surgery!! Congrats

I was told NO! I haven't had it since the day before my surgery (feb 8th) and thank god the cravings for it are completely gone

My doc and nutritionist agree that it's not a good choice since both sugary sodas and diet mess with blood glucose. Years ago, I made a decision to give up my several daily diet coke habit, since aspartame gives me aural Migraines.< /p>

I do use a little diet ginger ale in a mixed drink occasionally and enjoy a Perrier from time to time. Beer isn't comfortable for me at all. Since liquids flow through your stoma immediately, there's little chance of stretching your pouch.

My theory on this myth is that the band manufacturers need to have a scapegoat to explain slipped bands, erosions and other complications...just my $.02 :)

Looks like you have done great. You have the exact starting weight as me. I also want to do my best without a fill too quickly. I had no idea that soda was such a controversy. I just had heard different things. My dietician said some people can handle it and some couldn't but that I for sure couldn't for a month. I don't want to do ANYTHING either to mess my band up. I know soda is not good for you anyway but I do love it. But I rather be healthy anyday. Guess I will enjoy my last one tomorrow. :( Thanks everyone for your help!!

My Dr. said no. If that that is what it takes to be successful with the tool, it is a small price to pay.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
