Anyone familiar with Surgical Weight Loss Centers? Springfield, MO or Overland Park, KS

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have my first consultation with Surgical Weight Loss Centers tomorrow. I am super nervous and very excited. I am just wondering if there is anyone on here who has dealt with SWLC?

About 2 years ago I went to my primary care physician for help with my weight and I was absolutely humiliated and put on anti-depressants instead of receiving help for my weight issues. I took the pills for a while and decided that was not the way I wanted to handle things. I need help not medication. So I stopped taking the pills and have not gone back to the DR. I am hoping that going to an office that specializes in weight loss, I may be treated with respect. :) One can hope, right??

Not familiar with them as I am in Ohio. But, I just went to my consultation on Friday and they were extremely professional, understanding and supportive of my decision to have weight loss surgery.

Good luck!! I was nervous as well, but trust me it won't be nearly as bad as dealing with regular doctors.

Thanks!

Were they able to tell you how long it will be before you can have the surgery? I have read so many different stories so I guess it's different for everyone. I have found that self-pay seems to happen ALOT quicker.

The Doc asked when I was thinking I said Mid-May as that will be a good time for me. He said that won't be a problem. The person who actually schedules them will be calling me in a couple days.

So, I'm not sure how much sooner I could have done it. But, yes since we are self-pay it makes it A LOT easier! I met with the doctor, dietician and psychologist on Friday. They were all awesome and very understanding! They deal with people who have struggled with their weight every day so they aren't like regular doctors. It was really a VERY reassuring visit that confirmed that I'm doing the right thing for myself. Good luck!!!

Sounds exactly like what I am hoping to experience! :) Thanks for the encouragement! I am hoping for surgery as soon as possible. Do you have to do a low cal diet for a couple of weeks followed by a pure liquid diet for a week before the surgery?

Every surgeon is different when it comes to pre-op diets. I have heard of everything from a 2 week liquid diet, to no pre-op diet at all, to a low cal diet, to no diet at all! Not sure which your surgeon will do but mine does a two week low cal diet. Not 100% on my post op diet yet. I read it but can't recall the specifics off hand.

But, EVERY surgeon is different. It's crazy to me but literally there are tons of different pre-op diets out there that diff surgeons use.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
