Diabetic Type II and I have Questions for Pre Op and Post Op

I was going to say your hypoglycemia symptoms matched my own symptoms for hypotension which is why I was wondering about the blood sugar. You definitely have a complex set of circumstance.

I have diabetes II.. had my surgery on Jan 15, I have lost 28 lbs.. I do not take any of the diabetic medication I was on now.. My family Dr. took me off of the glipcide when I was on the pre=op diet to keep me from having a low blood sugar.. I check my sugar each day and it remains in a good range. just make sure you keep your regular Dr. informed.I think you already have a good handle on it.. you will be surprised how much better you will feel after losing some weight.. that is why I decided to have the lap band so I would have a healthier life... good luck on your journey

Yes, Fredric, I am complicated! Add Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to the mix, and... What a mess! This is why it's been so hard to get any weight off.

Thank you, Sharpie, for your words of experience regarding diabetes. Unfortunately, my primary care doctor is out for a month due to her own illness. I will get her back in the loop before I have any surgery. I have appointments on 3/11 and 3/20 for all the tests and meetings with psych and nutrition, ect. I'll also be going to Joslin Diabetes Hospital for a consult.

Thank you for your good wishes! I believe all will work out fine. I am researching all I can, and asking and asking questions at every seminar and appointments that I go to, as well on this forum. I believe I will get the answers and be on my way.

I'll keep you posted!

Hang in there! I m dealing with some new health problems...in my last pcp appointment my blood pressure was a lil high, well I have a device to monitor the blood pressure at home, because my husband need it, so I noticed that maybe I have pre hypertension. The last days I checked 3 times per day and the typical numbers are 140/87, 137/90, 142/95...and my pulse 95,98,100... I have another appointment with my pcp the next week to check this, and a problem in my stomach. But I will have my first seminar on April, so will see! Good luck!

Oh I forgot, I have Diabetes 2 and I take Metformin 1,000mg per day....I like your threat! Thanks!

Yes, my blood sugars go down when I am feeling hypoglycemic. Here are my "numbers" that were tested in the hospital and are where I cannot go:

Blood sugar of 190 - I begin to shake and have rough hypo symptoms

Blood sugar of 170 or below - I pass out (Most do this when blood sugar is 130 or so)

So, in my first nutrition meeting today, they said they are sending me to the Joslin Diabetes Hospital, which is luckily right across the street from the hospital I have chosen for my surgery.

Hypoglycemia has been a huge problem of mine since I was a kid. Diabetes is new, and all over my family history.

I'm truly confused by your numbers, (Most do this when blood sugar is 130 or so). Most people don't pass out at 130 BG. It's a bit high and an am reading of 126 or higher indicates diabetes. Hypoglycemia occurs at BG <70.

I'm T2 and my levels have been managed since I was put on my supervised diet. My A1c went from 7.8 to 4.9. The only time I was hypoglycemic was after surgery, about 2 weeks, had am BG of 65. Nutritionist suggested a pre bed snack 100 cal 1/3 Protein 2/3 quality carbs. This helped and haven't had a problem since.

Personally I don't start to feel hypoglycemic until my BG gets below 45 and I did get down to 35 without passing out. Right now while I'm on the post op diet I'm hovering around 75 most mornings with no weakness or noticeable impact on my thinking.

And my A1c the week before surgery was 5.9 which my physician considered well managed.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
