Banded on 2/19 and want to be sure I'm normal!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I was banded on 2/19 and everything went smoothly. The thing is, I was prepared to experience problems drinking, and I haven't. I can still gulp down water( I know this because I awoke thirsty in the night and guzzled Water before I remembered my band!)

I am also experiencing pain in the port incision( which my nurses said is larger than normal,) I also have bruising around the incision. I tried to go to work yesterday but it was too uncomfortable.

I'm on liquids for three weeks and the store bought broth is disgusting to me. Has anyone made their own? I tried it and it was delicious but it sent me right to the bathroom.

Any advice/thoughts are appreciated!

I haven't had any problems taking large sips either. My nurse told me to take 1 oz every 15 minutes, but I found I could drink more and more quickly. But I do find I take longer with full liquids than Clear Liquids. As far as Soup goes, my dietician said to get Soups and strain out the pieces for more tasty and more variety of broth.< /p>

That's great news( straining the soup!) I can't stand plain broth and I find myself craving taste.

Have you have diarrhea? Seems I have bouts whenever I have a rich broth...

I've only had 3 bms so far and they have been loose but that's not unusual for me. Plus liquid in liquid out.

gulping Water while insides are still swollen as it hurts so dont do it...sip and sip and then sip some more.....and yes, your incisions will be sore and each day that passes, it will get better..my advice is to take it easy, rest and allow your body to heal and just develop patience. congrats on your new life

The thing is, I'm WAY over on Fluid intake because there is no pain. I was expecting some but it never happened. My only pain has been the one larger incision. I didn't even have gas pain! I think they may have forgotten to place the band, lolol!

I never had that initial problem with drinking before my band was filled as some others had. They still want you to sip because you don't know when the big gulp is going to be too big of a gulp and you might have to get it up which with a newly stitched band can cause slippage. Yes when I go back for fills now and drink broth it runs straight trough (sorry for the gross visual). Good luck. Remember you might feel that you can go fast now but trust me its better to learn slow habits now and have better results than stay in bad habits. Remember its a learning tool. This is your first few lessons. Don't ignore the teachers. (The DOCS AND NURSES that is not us!) :)))

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
