Cardio & toning up

Should I be doing just cardio? Or cardio && toning up?

Both ideally, but put it this way - to strip fat cardio is great but you can lose muscle too. Strength training is slower to result in weight loss but will build you a better body in the long run. Both is perfect.

In reality strength training makes me sooooo hungry, I simple can't help but eat more. For my body an hour of running a day is the best way to lose weight but now ive been at goal for five years, creating a calorie deficit isn't my focus but I literally get so hungry with serious strength training I have to restrict somewhat so as not o actually overeat. But I love what its doing for my shape!

I've been doing cardio && strength exercises. I've heard that doing strength exercises makes you weight loss slow down so I was considering stopping that && just focusing on cardio.

If you are building muscle, it CAN make the scale slow down, but you will still be losing fat. But, you can do strength training with an eye toward toning instead of building massive amounts of muscle. The key is low weight, lots of reps. BTW, while building muscle will slow down the scale, it will help speed fat loss.

My experience with toning in the best was that HIT (high intensity training) worked best. Basically your goal was to do 10 reps at the heaviest weight you could manage. What I did is each time I went to the gym I'd record my weight and reps for each exercise. If I couldn't do at least 8 reps the next time I came in I'd reduce the weight if I could do more than 12 reps I'd increase the weight next time. The other factor was don't take long pauses between exercises move to the next one as quickly as possible. Immediately after this kind of workout I'd usually feel sore but energetic and the soreness would quickly fade but even at my heaviest this method always gave me some definition within just a few weeks.

Another advantage was it was a quick workout the disadvantage I found was if the gym is crowded it can slow down how quickly you get to the next exercise.

Yes cardio and light weight toning so you don't bulk up. Light weights more reps will tone ya up! I hate that part of the workout! I'm a cardio girl!! I feel like I will tone it when I will let people see it..yup I'm bad lol

I got no results with low weights high reps but this could simply be a case of different body compositions.

I'd suggest choosing one type of routine and sticking with it for 2-3 months if you don't see any results or plateau quickly try something different but keep trying.

That's exactly what I thought. Lol. I don't wanna have excess skin so I wanna start toning up now, but I also don't want that to slow down my weight loss. /:

Toning may slow down the scale, but it will not usually slow down the inches lost and therefor your cloths should fit better, etc. To me how I feel and how my cloths fit is way more important than what the scale says.

I suggest you read this book - it's extremely well done and balanced with no "agenda" / the author uses several legit studies and its a smooth easy informative read.

Bottom line for everyone I know Witt long term success is to take a balanced approach between strength and cardio / consistent frequency but always mixing up the ways you do the cardio and strength.

Good luck and enjoy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
