4 days post op - questions and comments

Recommended Posts

i may be around 8 or 10 ounces a day currently and its pretty painful swallowing although ive had nothing come up. i called the doctor on day 1 post op and explained my issues. he said it just may be swelling and my opening is very small but he also mentioned the band was pretty snug and if i cant get more fluids in by the end of the weekend, they may have to give me fluids via IV or worst cas, surgery again to place a larger band! im freaking out a bit because surgery is the last thing on my mind. im still very very sore and not moving around very well at all. i wasnt planning on missing much work, but at this rate, im in big trouble. any words of encouragement or advice?

Doing much better today, although I had planned on returning to work today, I just don't feel up to it. It's the "getting to work" that worries me. Driving, bumps in the rode, train ride, shuttle to the office etc. I'm still sore in the upper abdomen and moving around pretty gingerly. My next issue is the istant gas pain after drinking or eating anything. Although it seems to disipate quicker with each day. No bowel movements yet, but I haven't eaten much either. I started liquidy foods like cream of wheat, sugar free pudding, etc today. Feels good to get some food in me! I quoted my previous post becuase I wanted to let anyone interested know, that I have been able to get more liquids in, still some pain, but trying to get as much fluids in me as possible. Each morning since the operation, I feel a little but better although I feel best when I'm laying up in bed! Walking is okay too, sitting for long periods causing me some pain. I'm planning on going back to work tomorrow!

What is the average to returning to work after surgery? How long before the instant gas (belching) after eating/drinking goes away? I know it variies for everyone but i'd like to get an idea. And lastly, for the folks who were banded several weeks/months agao, how long before you all start eating solid food?

I took off three weeks! But I had the time that I saved! I'm glad for that! I think 1-2 weeks. But everyone is different! Every one says that! But I could not imagine going back to work after a couple of days. Also I lift heavy things in my job so that's why I didn't get the ok! Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
