Relieved that my GES came back normal, but food gets stuck in my stomach above the band and in my esophagus.

Gastric Emptying Study showed my stomach is emptying within normal parameters with one abnormal result: Immediately after consuming 4 oz eggbeaters and one piece of toast (no crust) and jam followed by 4 oz Water, the first picture showed the food backed up in my esophagus! The time they gave me to eat the food was 10 min, I ate half in 10 min, felt like I was done and the tech came back and told me to eat the rest of the eggs and another half piece of toast.

So what does this mean? The GI doctor says I have mild gastroparesis, but isn't sure why food is getting backed up, especially since my band has been empty (EGD showed stoma open 12/6/12). I'm more confused than ever. I'm to stay on the amitiza for Constipation and on the low fiber/low residue diet (which has helped, I'm able to eat) for two more weeks, then make an appt for follow up.

Thanks Missy, I've put my history on my blog. Yes, had EGD in December. I am very frustrated. I'm thankful that my GI doc is exploring every option before recommending band removal/revision.

Does your esophagus show any abnormalities? Like polyps or lesions in the lining?

I hate to even ask this, but have they done any sort of tissue biopsy to make sure there isn't something going on?

I really hope they get to the bottom of it. If it is the band causing it, let's be honest, that's a lot easier to fix and less serious than some of the other options.

All of the above, biopsies, etc...more confused than ever :(

Wow... it does sound like the band then.

I know you don't want to have your band removed or revise to another WLS, but look at the bright side: You can have the band removed and revise to a new surgery (if you choose). Your problem is then gone as well as your risk for future issues as a result of esophageal irritation and reflux. That is a A LOT better and easier to "fix" than something far more sinister and unrelated to the band, you know?

Yes...if I revise, it will be to VSG. My husband is afraid of this, but his only comfortable options are another band or nothing. I can't do malabsorption due to other issues. We're still trying to figure this out. My GI doctor didn't think the band was at fault, but will be interesting to hear what he has to say in two weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
