How soon until you can swallow pills??

Recommended Posts

Hello, I was banded on Thursday Feb 21st and am currently crushing all the pain meds I am taking. I usually take Biotin and three large Vitamin capsules for Hair loss because I tend to lose a lot of hair with weight loss. The Vitamins for my hair taste awful even in the capsule so I am afraid to open them up and try to swallow what's inside. My question is, are most people able to swallow capsules once you have started to eat solid foods? If so, do they ever get stuck?

Your options are cut, crush or change to a liquid if available. In Vitamins you can try a chewable. I HATE crushing pills. Taking them that way is just a pain in the butt to me. And nastyyyyyyyy.......

If a pill gets stuck, you will be lucky if it blows back out like a whale. Otherwise prepare for some potential discomfort.

I only take chewables or liquids. I was told I could never have swallowables. But I have seen people say the do swallow pills. Ask your doctor. Also make sure your doctor knows what supplements you are taking. Some ingredients don't mix with the Band.

I've been taking my pills since 2 days post op. A couple of them are quite large. My doc said it would not be a problem if I took it slow, one at a time, and waited a few seconds in between. I don't have any fill at this time though, but even then, he said I won't have a problem.

I used to throw the handful in my mouth at one time and swallow them all. It is hard to get used to taking them one at a time, but honestly, I haven't felt any problem yet at all. Today is day 6, and I take them 3 times a day. I'd say try one whole and see what happens. If you have to drink a lot of Water to get it go to down, you'll know that wasn't a good idea.

I take regular sized pills every day and I'm post op 3 weeks. I never take them with Water since I tend to gag at the pill taste when it starts to dissolve so I take them with juice and no prolems. But that is me. I say try it and see what happens.

I crushed my pilss when I was first banded....could not stand it...

Ever since I swallow my pills whole....

I take 4 LARGE gell caps of "LOVZA" Omega 3....plus a very large "Mega Men's" Multi-Vitamin........and my Cardiac Meds which I will have to take for the rest of my life......one at a time, time in between, no problem.....

Also swallow pills on a empty stomach (pouch)....any food sitting there would definitely be a problem.....

I am very tight, where I have to watch everything I eat, and can fill every swallow...even Water....

Been doing this for 2 years now, no problems.....

I take all my pills in the morning, Biotin and two Multi Vitamins and Calcium with Vitamin D which is the largest. If I find I'm a bit tight in the mornings then I take them at night time as my band loosens a bit by then. My nutritionist advised taking pills with a bit of yoghurt to help them go down too if I was having problems taking them.

I was told liquid or chewable. If solid it would have to be TINY. Make sure you are getting your Protein in. This should help with Hair loss.< /p>

After a month I was able to swallow pills and not crush. I used some applesauce to mask off any of the crushed pills taste.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
