Slipped band!

Recommended Posts

Hello

I was banded Jan 22nd and have no issues an doing great. My husband was banded Tuesday and in Thursday tried to eat for the first time and started vomiting right away and he got the stuck feeling but the pain or the vomiting never went away so we called the doc and we had to go in.

They said his stomach was very swollen and was making the band very tight so they took out the Fluid and have him a steroid shot to reduce the swelling and said he should feel better within a day.

So we get home he gets down broth for lunch then try's a Protein shake and bam pain so he stops and It goes away.

At midnight he throws up again and again along with bad reflux so we call doc and says to come to the hospital.

They have him zofran and protonix to help they did nothing he was still vomiting A LOT. He then had a massive pain in his chest and I had to rush and get nurse and they then have him reglan and he finally felt better.

It gets the swallow test and a chest X-ray and his band slipped. So they he has to go into surgery and fix it but they also said they wanted to shave part of his stomach to help the band got better when we heard this we said take the band out!

We are so incredibly sad that this didn't work for him and he is now petrified if ever doing surgery again.

This ever happen to anyone?

Throwing up is the worst thing you can do the first few weeks. What did he try to eat on Thursday that caused the vomiting?

I am so sorry this happened to your husband, complications like this are rare but unfortunately possible. I know my physician recommends the gastric sleeve to patients when the band fails. I do agree with your decision of having the band removed because once the band has slipped there is a high chance of this happening again. Hope he feels better soon and once he has recovered from this event maybe he can discuss other alternatives if he wants with his physician. Best wishes to you both.

I was on liquids for a week post op. When I went in for my first follow up, I was cleared to go to mushy (yogurt, pudding like consistency.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
