First Stuck Episode

Recommended Posts

I've had a few times when things were slow to go down, but I have been officially stuck since dinner last night (so 18 hours now). Its not miserable, but it is very uncomfortable. Trouble is, I'm with a client in rural Montana for 3 more days and getting an unfill isn't really an option unless I'm dying. It definitely feels less uncomfortable than it did last night and even early this morning. Does that mean the food is perhaps pushing through? Also, what are the odds that it will eventually push through on its own if I don't eat, but stay on liquids? I have taken a couple of papaya enzyme. Should I take more? I'm really hoping this goes away on its own. By the way, it's spaghetti squash I'm stuck on. Please share your experiences. I'm "stuck" in more ways than one.

Stuck episodes usually last less than an hour and your pouch will massage the food through. It sounds like you have some swelling that may inhibit food flow somewhat? Can you drink Water? If you can sip or drink up to 4 ozs of Water you are not stuck.

When I have a stuck episode I can feel the pressure has gone away and I then drink cold water. I can feel it flowing into my lower stomach. Cold fluids may help reduce the swelling. It's like putting a cold pack on a swollen ankle.

meat tenderizer has been recommended here before. But squash is fibrous but should push through eventually and usually within minutes.

Have you called your surgeon?

Try coca cola. I drink about 1 oz and drink it warm. I drink real coke, not diet. It is like roto-rooter. But a stuck episode for 18 hours is real scary. The coke is what a nurse who trained in New Zealand suggested to my son, while he was in Spain. I am not sure if he was stuck or they were just conversing at the time. The coke works for me almost immediately. if not you need to see your surgeon, ASAP! best wishes, Karen

The papaya enzymes come in a chewable tablet, you can buy them at GNC or order them on-line from them. If you become a member you should get 20% off your order and then 20% off your order at the beginning of each month. Hope this helps.

You could also try pineapple juice. It works really well too.

You're probably swollen. food can not stay stuck that long because the acid in your stomach would break it down. If you can drink fluids there is nothing stuck. Just stay on liquids a few days you should be okay.

What does papaya do? What do you take it for? I'm new at this!

The papaya enzymes are little tablets you can buy where you get Vitamins. The enzymes help aid digestion (same with the pineapple juice). Sometimes you just need a little help to get the food through your band and these can work.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
