Really stuck last night

Recommended Posts

Oh my! I got stuck last night and about scared myself silly! I was banded in Sept. and have thought I was learning how to eat correctly, etc. The fill I got last week has turned everything on its ear though. I have obviously not learned enough up til now because now I am finding out what all the more experienced folks have warned about the tiny bites and slowing waaay down really mean!

I ate half a baked chicken thigh last night, pretty much without thinking, because halfway through the last bite I started hurting and pb'ing. I had to spit out what was in my mouth...and for a few minutes couldn't even swallow my own secretions! I know this is TMI, but for those of you new to this who haven't been stuck yet...I seriously don't recommend it!

I'm going back on soft foods today to give it a rest, then back to square one with my eating lessons: tiny bites, go slow, chew until my jaw aches.

Omg. That happens to all of us at one point. Yes, it's scary. But that's how we learn. Good Luck.

Someone told me to put your fingers down your throat if you are really stuck. I never have but I would think that would be wrong to do

What is pb-ing? I keep seeing it mentioned, but have no idea what it means. Is there a "band lingo" thread?

It's when the food you just ate comes back up - no stomach acid involved, so it's not really vomit. Some people just burp and it comes up, other are more violent (like me, it's just like vomiting except it's just food). The first year or so after surgery for me it would be accompanied by major gobs of "goo" (saliva built up in your esophagus. Looks like a jellyfish in the toilet (sorry if tmi).

Hope that helps. Oh, and PB stands for Productive Burp

So is there a difference between sliming and just lots of mucous production? I've had the thing where mucous keep coming and I have to spit into a cup constantly. But I've never had anything that looked like a jellyfish in the toilet!

I'm not sure about the jellyfish...I couldn't let myself actually bring it up, but I was oh so close! I'll be interested in the answer too.

It's happened to me a couple of times, both when I was eating and distracted and forgot the golden rules. The first time I sat there trying to tough it out, it hurt, it filled my mouth over and over with slime, my nose run and my eyes watered. And I hiccuped. It was awful, but it eventually went down. The second time, I went into the bathroom, leaned way over the toilet and just kinda gacked it up (think cat with a hairball). Yes, food-jellyfish. That time I felt better almost immediately, and could actually go back and eventually finish my food --- carefully of course. I am not sure why anyone would leave something stuck when there is a simple solution right there?

The first time I was really stuck was very scary too. I often don't feel stuck until a few bites in as well. Take your time and rest between bites. Also cut your Protein really small, like the size of a pencil eraser, I was told. That should help.

The very first time I slimed, I coughed and the jellyfish ended up on the front of my tee shirt. It was gross. Now, if I PB (very rarely) it always waits till I'm near a toilet and there's not so much "goo" it's mainly just food that comes up. Ah, the good ole days....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
