My surgery is only on 21st March and I keeping reading about the first fill, but do you actually start to lose the weight before your first fill?

I lost weight on my pre op and 10lbs my first week post op, after that, everything I have lost has been because I have been 'dieting', I have not reached restriction so for lack of a better term my band is not yet working for me. (just had a fill on Friday so do feel I am closer)

I didn't lose much before my first fill, second fill, third fill or 4th fill.........everyone is different, so here is hoping it kicks in before my 5th fill.

There r no dumb questions on this site as we all get used to the life style of eating and changing r bodies , yes u do lose weight at the begining cause most Doctors put u on a restricted diet , then some stick to the restricted diet and some ease into a more substance way of eating , I gained a little after surgery then I plateaued for a couple of weeks , then by my fourth fill I REALLY noticed a different on how much I could eat my Surgeon waits 2-3 weeks before each fill at frst he waited a month to give me my first fill so I could heal I went from 276 in july to 226 in Jan , just remember ever body is diffrent and this site is very helpful , remeber there r no dumb questions on this site and if their is something we can't really help with then u can always ask ur Doctor to make sure.

Some people do but then some do not. There are some who have been fortunate enough to never need a fill There are some that take several fills and I am one of them. People lose differently then others so I am sure you will hear a mixed bag of responses.

I don't think my weight loss really picked up steam for me until I was two months post op and my first fill was 5cc. One piece of advice I can offer is not to get to hung up on losing that first month post op. That first month is really a time for healing and give your body a chance to get acclimated to the band. I got really frustrated at first because I figured "OK I had surgery when does the weight move"...I learned the hard way it does not work that way, at least for me.

I'm not really in a rush as I know and accept that a slow weight loss is best for you, here in SA we have to pay for the surgery so I am just worried that my hubby is going to think we have wasted money if he can't see it working right away. I can't imagine though being on liquids only and not losing weight. I guess it is a different journey for everybody.

I had my lap band with plication surgery on Jan. 21 of this year. Before that I was on a 2 week liquid only diet. So, since Jan. 8, I have lost 34 pounds. I am getting ready to start soft foods after I see my doc this week. I feel my plication is providing restriction already. I eat between 800 and 100 calories daily and 60 grams of protein.I use My Fitness Pal app to log my food/exercise. Best of luck to you.

I never got a fill for a year. Some people will lose right after surgery and some don't. Everyone is different and your results will vary from mine or someone else's. You can't worry what people expect you too lose because that is why others get discouraged because they are going by what people expect of them.

My suggestion would be to ensure your Husband is educated and if possible following along with your journey. Reason I say that is because there is a lot of misconceptions about Bariatric surgery as a whole. A lot of people tend to think it is a 'magic bullet' and that there is no work involved. I have had a co-worker take a month off of work and he came back and said to me "you haven't lost all the weight yet?"

Wish you the best of luck!!

Thank you so much Jim, I going to take my hubby (also Jim) along with me to the doctor, he doesn't mean to be discouraging but I get super sensitive, I have wasted a lot of money in the past so I am praying with all my heart this will be the answer.

You definitely can lose weight without a fill- or without ever having a fill for that matter. Fills don't make you lose weight, consuming less calories than you burn is what results in weight loss.

I lost 44 pounds by the time I had my first fill 6 weeks after surgery. But, I also started counting calories the day I got home from the hospital. The fills are what helps control my hunger and keep me satisfied on smaller amounts of food but it's restricting my calorie intake that has allowed me to lose weight.

Best wishes.

You're welcome. I think the key will be for him to have a better understanding of how it all works and the patience it requires to be successful. Everything takes time and this journey is no different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
