Running after surgery

Recommended Posts

So I'm not a real runner by any means but I like to alternate running and walking in 6 minute intervals currently (so I can get 2 miles done in half an hour usually) How soon after surgery were people who do run able to resume it or start. My surgeon is saying 6 weeks but at the same time he seemed a bit surprised by the question so I assume I was the first patient to ask (or possibly just the first patient my size to ask).

Listen to what your doctor says. In the meantime brisks walks are really good for you too. Amazing you can do so much. I just started exercising and its just on my wii. Keep up the good work!

Actually my fear is that 6 weeks of just walking will set my meager running habit back. It took a year to build up the muscles to handlle the 6 minute bursts as it is.

I'll do as instructed by my surgeon I was just wondering about other people's experiences.

My Dr said exercise as tolerated. He said to get back to walking as soon as I felt able to and progress as I felt comfortable. I think I started a light jog after 3-4 weeks. The only weird thing (that I never heard anyone else talk about) was I would get a tight feeling where my port was. It almost felt like it was swelling up. When that would happen I would just slow down to a really slow walk. I think I would get the tight feeling for to 3-4 months after surgery. It has been just over a year now and I don't get that anymore.

I'm running 6 weeks post-op and feel good. Listen to your body and your doctor. Best wishes!

Walking...day of surgery

Aerobic activity...4 weeks

all exercise etc...6 weeks

But that was based upon on how I felt/was doing at post op check ups.

If you've been a runner for a year now, and walk at a fast speed for 6 weeks, I think it will take less than 6 weeks to get back to where you were. I know running friends who give up running for 6 weeks after pregnancy (and some time before) get back into it in less than 2 months after the 6 week wait.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
