Shopping for an elliptical...

Recommended Posts

I want to purchase an elliptical to use at home. Does anyone have suggestions on brands? I am trying not to spend a huge amount.

I would look at Craig's list or even place an add asking if anyone is selling one. If at all possible try it out before you buy it and make sure to take back up with you!

I don't know brand names. But look at Craigslist. Sometimes people really want them out of the house and sell them real cheap. Good luck finding one.

Some even give them away if you move it out of their houses.

What about that new commercial I keep seeing for the elliptical/bike combo? It's called a pro form hybrid. I looked online and it's about 400 bucks.

The best brands are Precor, Cybex and Life Fitness - be sure it syncs with the brand of HR monitor you are using. My unsolicited suggestion is to NOT buy an elliptical as you will get a better return on your $ using it toward group fitness classes or membership to a gym. Your body will quickly adjust to the elliptical and you won't get the longterm results you seek - the exception to this is of course if you are using the elliptical as only a part of overall CrossTrain approach - but that seems like heavy $$$ for that : )

Good luck on your path - congrats on attacking life with Exercise !

Thanks for the responses...my ortho has advised me to only use an elliptical style machine for cardio...he is trying to postpone knee replacement as long as possible. I can't do any weightlifting for another 6-8 weeks per my lap band doctor. I am still recovering from surgery. I had two incidents of my port causing severe pain after weight training and they have recently moved it to the opposite side of my abdomen because of excess scar tissue. The surgeon wants to make sure it heals completely before I start weight training. I am following orders by doing the elliptical and various cardio dvd's. The closest gym is 45 minutes away and the classes are over when I get off work. I do appreciate the suggestions but I'm trying to do exactly what my ortho and lap band doctors have suggested. Hope everyone is having a great week!

Thanks Lee...I've been banded for 1 year...lost 104 pounds...I've been insulin free since the day of surgery (after taking 7 shots a day for 4 years) and my blood pressure is now perfect. I've never felt better! The band is the best present I ever gave myself... Thanks for the encouragement!!!

Wow that's awesome thanks for telling me ! Huge success / life is good huh ; ) aside from getting the band - to what do you attribute your success? If you don't mind me asking ? I found few IF ANY WLS people that just got the surgery (especially the band ) and then everything just magically happened ... So do tell ; )

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
