My Dr. says no gum ever.. he explained that if you accidentally swallowed it it would get stuck and you would have to have it surgically removed.. also the chewing of gum causes too much air to be swallowed which is not good for your pouch..All I know is I didn't go through all of this to chew gum and have it screw up my band.... whatever my "Dr. says I am doing.. he also does not allow straws or carbonated drinks of any kind... so I think I can live without all of those things for a healthy life...

I said "Accidentally " not that I am some child that would purposely swallow my gum.. If your Dr. says chew gum then chew away... I am newly banded and I am not taking any chances...

Sorry I didn't mean to offend you. I was just trying to be funny. I meant no harm.

I chew gum all the time because I have chronic dry mouth and my tongue is always in severe pain. I chew gum that has the first ingredient xylitol which is dentist recommended for dry mouth and for fighting tooth decay.

Everyone , responses and opinions are like navels we all have them.. Nobody has to be snarky or try to be cute when someone responds honestly to a question... I thought we were adults who were serious about weight loss on here, but evidence of the contrary is here on this thread. I am too old for drama and the "gotcha" game and I don't think my statement was meant to be silly or cute.. I simply said what My Dr. says.. that is what he is paid to do. There are always exceptions to some things and as a new band person I am very serious about not doing any damage to myself or my band..so think before you make your comments..

My doc never mentioned a NO GUM policy. The best thing is to call the office and ask.

I had to ask my Dr. about gum, because I always chewed sugar free gum when I was on a diet.. so, yes the best thing to do is to ask.. they all have their own issues with different things..

As always take what you can use from the post and leave the rest behind. You will never like 100% of the posts you read just ignore what you don't like. Always use your doctors advice as final say.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
