buckeyegirl4 19 Posted February 16, 2013 I am curious as to why some stay overnight and some don't. Does it depend on your BMI or if you have a hiatal hernia repaired?
MandaMom23 684 Posted February 16, 2013 I'm not sure, but I think in some cases insurance requires an overnight stay. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this
Maddysgram 6,159 Posted February 16, 2013 I had to stay overnight just b/c having surgery so late in the day. If they could have scheduled it early morning, I could have gone home. Even staying overnjght, it is still considered Outpatient. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this

DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! 12,703 Posted February 16, 2013 My surgeon keeps everyone overnight as a precaution. Plus, then you can get the "good" pain killers that first night via IV. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this
Spaness2012 609 Posted February 16, 2013 They gave me the option actually. I could go home when my pain was tolerated or I could stay the night. I opted for going home but looking back on it.....I really should have just stayed the nght and got the goods meds. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this
babykins529 189 Posted February 17, 2013 Mine was day outpatient. Some insurance or surgeons require it, especially if the patient lives far away and if something went wrong, it would take a long time to get back to the hospital. Sometimes if your pain isn't managed well they will keep you. I had that happen when I had surgery to remove a tumor in my leg. I actually went home the day after, had so much pain a few hours after going home that I had to be rushed back to the hospital in the ambulance and they kept me on a pain pump of hydromorphone for 5 days. Not fun. I honestly don't even really remember much of that stay. But the pain wasn't too bad for me at all with the lap band so I had no issue going home. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this
sim29 6 Posted February 17, 2013 My surgery is scheduled for 2/20 and my stay is approved for up to 23hrs with my insurance company. My bmi is 39. I think its just my doc requiring an overnight stay.
Cindy2013 99 Posted February 17, 2013 My doc requires overnight so that he can give another shot of blood thinner. Most of his patients go home same day, but those with DVT experience stay overnight. Actually I live 1.5 hours away so it is a little reassuring to be staying overnight. And that extra shot of heparin before heading home is okay with me as long as I don't get bloodclots again. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this
cksweetpea 26 Posted February 17, 2013 My insurance didn't allow me to stay overnight. And boy let me tell you, I felt like the hospital kicked me out as soon as I was coherent. I was in quite a bit of pain and very nauseated when they sent me home.
honk 780 Posted February 17, 2013 As mentioned above if you're in the hospital for 23 hours then it's considered outpatient. I had my surgery later in the day than originally planned like at 4 I stayed overnight and then was discharged by noon. I didn't really have any special painkillers but I was glad that I stayed overnight. For 1 thing the toilet was very close to my bed and I spent my night in the toilet every 20 minutes. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this
Terry Poperszky 2,784 Posted February 17, 2013 My Dr. used a surgical center so in and out the same day. As a self pay patient that saved me at least 3K over a hospital. As for the "good drugs" I had a bottle of Percocet, and wasn't feeling any pain
dolphintattoo 96 Posted February 17, 2013 My doc keeps all patients overnight, not sure his specific reasoning but I know I could not have gone home the first 8 hours or so after surgery because I was pretty out of it. I went home the next morning following barium swallow and was ok for the ride home. 1 buckeyegirl4 reacted to this

gowalking 10,790 Posted February 18, 2013 same here.. 23 hours still considered 'same day'. I have bad arthritis in my right knee and both the doctor and I felt it would be better for me to stay overnight so I could have a nurse help me walk around, get in and out of bed, etc. it was the right thing for me to do. I didn't sleep well obviously, but there was a certain feeling of security knowing I was where I needed to be in case there was a problem. plus I got the blood thinner shots regularly and pain meds regularly as well.
