Lap band and thyroid

Recommended Posts

Yes, I had my thyroid removed and am on medication for that. This is the only way I have been able to lose weight and keep it off. I have lost 63 pounds since my highest weight in about Oct 2011. I was banded in Jan 2012.

Oh, and to answer your question, I don't think it has been slower to lose with the band, I just had a lower BMI than many to start with.

I had a high bmi I was banded Sept 2012 but I have always had thyroid issues since I was 17 , it went away for a while after I had my first child in 83, then right before I was banded I went thru all the test and my inactive thyroid had came back so I am still taking the medication untill I hit goal weight , yes it's been slow however when I hit the goal weight I am going to have my pcp order labs & get a full physcial to see if it has gotten any better , I weighed 276 in july I am now at 226 and still hoping to lose more I am not rushing it tho cause I don't want the weight back on , so when I get to my goal u see I said when , then I will ask for the lab work, and my weight really flucuates no matter how healthy I eat and how much Protein I get, hopefully this helped .

I also have thyroid issues and in my case, it has definitely made the journey slower. I'm okay with that though. At least I'm losing! My endocrinologist is perfectly happy with the results I've had so far and frankly, so am i.

Good luck!

I have an under active thyroid and hashimotos disease. I was told no amount of weight I lose will change my thyroid function by an endocrinologist . I have has slow weight loss with every other attempt I have made, except the band. It has been an amazing tool to help my lose weight.

I lost 40 lbs in the first year, nothing during the second (had some major health issues that stalled me) and am now down about 65 total at 30 months post banding. Like I said though, I'm just happy to be down this much and no more blood pressure medication, sleep apnea or pre-diabetes!

I also have Hashimoto's and no, losing weight doesn't help the thyroid function, it just explains the slower loss rate.

I'll take this new life over the old one, even if it has been slower than molasses. I'm out of the plus size department now too!

Biggest challenge is not comparing myself to others in the rate of losing. I have worked hard for each and every pound, just like everyone else, it just takes me longer to get results.

I am very hypothyroid. On 200 of synthroid. My weight loss is slow but I figure that is my fault more than anything.

I have hashimotos as well . I have tried every diet known to man .. And have little or no success. I'm hoping this will be a tool to help me achieve a healthier life style not be "skinny" per say. If I can at some point reach 200 lbs I would be ecstatic .

My niece has hashimoto disease as well. And has also tried every diet/plan/exercise known to man. She's given up. Kudos to you for finding another way, i wish you the very best on your journey.

I am also hypothryroid and taking 200mcg of levoxyl. I have lost 22 lbs in 3 weeks (banded 1/24/13). If my weight loss is going to be slow, I am down with that. That means my skin will have time to catch up so I won't have with too much saggy skin afterwards.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
