I have been lurking on the site for a while (I guess you can call it that). I feel that it is finally time to tell my story.

Hello everyone, my name is Shirley; I am currently at 344 (that is what the evil scale told me when I last went to the doctors) and am 28 years old. I have been looking into getting banded for several years and finally have decided to go for it. My current BMI is over 50 (I am 5’9”) but everyone says that I am very well built (I guess I hide my fat very well but it is still there, I know it every time I look in the mirror).

I first started my journey in April of 2012 with all the documentation that I needed but all it took was one horrible phone call to my insurance company to derail me for over 8 months. I contacted to see what I needed to do to get a preapproval so I did not have to wait for it (being the impatient person that I am) well, the agent on the line then told me I did not have bariatric coverage (and also claimed that I never had it). That is all it took for me to quit and not even bother trying again.

That was until recently, our health plans changed at work and I was informed by our administrators that we have ALWAYS had bariatric coverage and even better it is supposed to be covered at 100% (after our annual deductible is met).

So now, I am just waiting until the 23rd for the seminar with the surgeon’s office. I am really excited to be finally getting this show on the road. I am beyond ready to start this new chapter of my life.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me. From what I have been reading on here so far I love the atmosphere and everyone’s kind words of wisdom.

Welcome Shirley, we are all in the same boat ( not Carnival hehe ) so please ask questions and pretty soon you will be giving advice to the newbies. This is a great place to get your questions answered. it is always better to get medical questions answered by your doctor. Again welcome I look forward to hearing more about your journey. Hugs

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
