Soy, almond or cow's milk?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone-

I am having my surgery 1 week from today and just starting to prep for after surgery. I was wondering what milk you all prefer to mix with your Protein Powder and why. I go back and forth between them as I like them all. For example skim milk is most Protein but also most carbs. I love almond because its so low in carbs but its also low in protein. And then soy is sort of in the middle.

Is one better than the other when it comes to weightloss? Thanks for your input!

It all comes down to what you can tolerate. If you have lactose issues avoid the cow milk and go for soy. For me I can do the 1%, but have always prefered the 2%. While I know that the 2% isn't the best for me I eat a rather low fat diet so I use my 3/4 cup of 2% a day.

As long as you are taking the calories into account use what you like.

I use unsweetened almond milk..just because I like the nutty flavor. If you want more Protein, cow's milk is better. You just have to find what works and tastes better for you :)

If you are going for Protein then cows milk. soy nor almond contain as much protein as cows milk just use skim

Almond milk all the way. I gave up cow milk a few years ago... you know what is in that stuff. The Protein you lose switching is negligible, easily made up elsewhere and unsweetened almond milk is half the calories of skim cow milk.

I suggest you go with what you need n lucky you can tolerate all of them and like all of them. For me I wasn't getting enough calories n needed less Protein. So depending on where I was during the day with my nutrients, is how I used to choose. I think I did 1 soy, 1 ff milk n one store bought which had more protein than the others. But I really like the vanilla soy with my chocolate shake taste yummy. As to weight loss I say as long as you count, it if you track, then whatever you prefer.

I love my unsweetened vanilla almond milk, it is so good and since I'm mixing it with Protein powder, it's okay that it's not high in protein.

I too use the unsweetened almond milk original flavor. I don't even miss milk anymore. I actually like the taste of the unsweetened almond milk

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
