suggestions on preop shakes

Recommended Posts

You will likely need to try several different brands to find one or more that you will like. That's important, as shakes will. Be a part of your life fow awhile.

My surgeon advised to only use shakes which have 100% whey isolate Protein, which is considered to be a complete source of Protein for bariatric patients.

I like GNC products, but there are many others to choose from. I'm certain that other "vets" will chime in with their favorites.

Best wishes for a successful journey...

GNC Lean shakes make some that come pre bottled, they're really good for when you go back to work or on the go. The Strawberries and Cream tastes just like a strawberry milk you'd buy from the store.. and the vanilla bean is very yummy too.

I went to costco and got 2 huge bags of whey protien, vanilla and chocolate, 140 cals, 3 carbs, 27g protien each scoop. The chocolate isnt all that good, but i fit one in a day because it was expensive lol! The vanilla is pretty good, i mix mine with almond milk, unsweetened, 30 to 40 cals a cup. then about 1/4 to 1/2 berries of peaches pureed. Been on the liquid for a week and a half and its not to bad. I found a sugar free oregon chai tea at walmart..by far my fav with the almond milk and vanilla protien powder. U can also try the espresso syrups sugar free, makes them pretty tasty!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
