Coughing at night - do I need an unfill?

Recommended Posts

I've been banded since June 2010. My last fill was in November, and I feel like I am very close to being in the green zone, but maybe not quite there.

I occasionally have some regurgitation but I'm not 100% sure that it's not my fault from eating too fast or not chewing well enough, although I have been trying to be more mindful of that. Lately, I have woken up at night coughing.

They always ask if I cough at night when I go for a fill, and I never have, and I've always assumed they meant coughing like when you have a cold. Well, this type of coughing is like some liquid has come up and is trying to go in my lungs! Super no fun to wake up like that. I think it has happened 3 or 4 times since my last fill but the last 2 times are within the last week.

I have an appointment in a week, so I will talk with the dr at that point, but in the meantime I thought I'd ask for opinions here. I am scared of getting an unfill because I don't want to start gaining weight. I struggled last year and only had a net loss of 5 lbs for the year (weight bounced up and down instead of consistent losing), because I was either too tight or not tight enough and really struggled with eating right because of it. Now since the last fill on Nov 8 I have lost a little over 10 lbs so that's why I'm scared to mess with this fill level because I am going in the right direction.

I have read that fills can be tricky when you're really close to the green zone, is that correct?

I agree with Missy. Night cough like you describe is definitely a sign of reflux and nothing to mess around with. You are much better off to have even a tiny unfill than to risk doing damage to your band by staying too tight.

I was banded just after you in July 2010 and I have learned through the years that when my band is too tight, I end up putting weight back on because I eat more slider foods.

Glad you are getting it checked out, but don't assume that an unfill means failure!

I find that if I eat too late at night, I will have night coughs and phlegm coming into my mouth, choking me. I am not too tight myself, but need to remember not to eat after 8pm.

I had my band in Sept 2010 and the night before last I woke up choking... It was soo scary.. I've had Fluid taken out and have been on a soft diet since, but my chest still hurts.. I vomited twice after choking.. I think it was a combination of reflux and eating before bed... I'm just hoping the pain subsides and it's nothing serious. In the 2 1/2 years since I've had my band I've only had about 7 vomiting episodes. This is all new to me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
