Just scheduled my initial consult!!

Recommended Posts

I have been debating on having the Lap-Band surgery off and on for a couple years and have recently decided that it is time!! I scheduled my consult for March 1st with Dr Trace Curry. I am very excited / nervous about this huge next step in my life!!

So what questions did you wish you would have asked but forgot to at your initial consult?? I have a list of more common questions but I am curious if there is one that slipped your mind.

Thanks in advance!!

I think you should definitely ask about the recovery period. For some reason I figured I'd have surgery and heal in no time and just feel fine. I should have asked more questions and I feel like my doctor could have prepared me better. I had no idea what I had gotten into. I don't regret the surgery but the first 4 days were a struggle that I don't think I was prepared for. It made me depressed and regretful. But now I'm feeling much better and reassured. Good luck!

I too just scheduled my initial consult for February 27th. I can't wait, I'm excited and nervous and overwhelmed. I've been thinking about the lap band for about a 1.5 years. I finally decided to pick up the phone and call my insurance company to see if they supported the procedure and to my surprise they did. I have gained over 75 lbs since I had a hystroectamy 2.5 years ago. I am currently weighing in at 253 as of this morning. That puts my bmi at 37.7 so I have to qualify by having a sleep study done or I can pig out and pack on 6 more lbs between now and the 27th and save myself $500 or more on a sleep study. That's a horrible way to look at it but I've had all I can take. I have always been energetic and athletic up until my hystroectamy. I have to get some relief. I find myself being super depresed and overly tired. I feel that I am missing out on the most important time of my kids lives simply because I can't get the scale to move no matter what I do. So i've decided it's time to do something for myself. I'm just thankful that my husband is so supportave.

Congrats on your consult! I get what you mean about missing out on your kids. I have a 5 year old son, half of the time I feel too tired to run around with him outside for extended periods of time.

That's a tough call on the 6 pounds. $500 is a lot of money! I am self-pay as my insurance has an exclusion in the policy. I have sleep apnea and I know that sleep studies aren't cheap! I am in the opposite situation, I was told that I should try to lose some weight before surgery to get my bmi under 50. It's 51 now.

Good luck on your journey! Hope the consult goes well!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
